SigEx Telecom : HP, MIT bolster DSpace open-source archives
by Delia Cruceru

Hewlett Packard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology Libraries announced Wednesday the launch of the non-profit DSpace foundation, an open source system for digital archives, to support more than 200 institutions around the world for managing preserving, and share their documents, collections and research data. They also declared that the new director of DSpace Foundation is Michelle Kimpton, formerly of Internet Archive. "The creation of the DSpace Foundation and Michele Kimpton's appointment are important steps in the evolution of DSpace," said Ann Wolpert, MIT's director of libraries. "Together, these actions signal that both the platform and the community have successfully reached the point where an independent organization is needed to direct the project." DSpace was created in 2002, by the alliance of HP and MIT, and it’s an archive Internet based, so it can be accessed from anywhere in the world by anyone. Microsoft released an archive in Open XML format, but open source advocates say that Microsoft’s format it’s not that open and it can’t be compared with rival formats. Pamela Jones, an open-source expert and editor of the Groklaw blog, wrote: “If it were, Microsoft wouldn't need to make Novell and Xandros and Linspire sign NDAs (nondisclosure agreements) and then write translators for them,"
