Chicago will be safer with new camera system
by Nina Gotzmannova
If you were worried about your safety and secretly willing the police to have their eyes everywhere, pack your things and move to Chicago. Not only you will live in a city with the most advanced video security network in whole United States, but maybe you will see the 2016 Olympics too. Chicago has thousand of cameras spread all over the city. In the near future the camera system will have several new features, which will make the monitoring of streets even more detailed and intelligent. The cameras in the city already know some smart things. Recently the system can recognize shooting, turn cameras to the source and call emergency. The new system would do more. It will recognize license plates, it will call emergency if a vehicle looked by police enters the city, it will call emergency even if a backpack will be left in a park for more than 30 seconds or if the same car will circle around Sears Tower for more than three times. It would simple monitor all suspicious activity in the city and call 911 in case of troubles. This all is done because people just don't pay enough attention about what's going on around them. They don't want to interrupt someone else's privacy and that leads to criminal activity, which is witnessed, but not reported. Chicago also wants to apply to International Olympic Committee as a potential organizer of 2016 Olympics. The new security system can be only a plus. But as expected, the voices of opponents raised shortly after announcing this news on Thursday. Activists for civil rights are afraid that this monitoring system will lead to a life carefully watched by Big Brother.
