Nokia, Intel and Nokia Siemens Systems want to make WiMAX together by Corina Ciubotaru

Nokia, Intel and Nokia Siemens Networks are coming together for the good of WiMAX. Since Nokia intends to add WiMAX compatibility to its N-series Internet tablets, they also decided to equip them with next-generation Intel chips. The WiMAX technology is similar to Wi-Fi but it allows users to be farther away from the hotspot, with speeds five times faster. The idea is to provide Internet access like mobile phone coverage, with the user passing from one hotspot to another without interrupting his connection. The three companies have started to test compatibility with components from other manufacturers for WiMAX networks to make sure they pass inspections from the WiMAX Forum quickly and the technology becomes widely popular in short time. And since both Intel and Nokia are suppliers for Sprint Nextel Inc, it was only natural the tests would be conducted in its laboratory in Herndon, Virginia.Nokia's future N800 model will benefit from Intel's new Baxter Peak silicon processor and also feature Bluetooth 2.0 and Wi-Fi connectivity. It will be able to connect to WiMAX under Sprint Nextel's network, scheduled to launch in 2008. Currently, Nokia devices use chips from companies such as Texas Instruments, Broadcom and Infineon; Intel has so far failed to enter the mobile phone chip processor market and sold its cellular chip division to Marvell. Other devices that will feature WiMAX connectivity through Baxter Peak processors include laptops from Asustek, Acer, Lenovo, Toshiba and Panasonic and rumors say the new chips will be very cheap and fast.
