Amazon's Kindle brings a book revolution
by Corina Ciubotaru
It was about time for e-books to start having their own devices to be loaded on, and who better to start selling the readers than Amazon, the biggest online book store? The gadget is called Kindle and is able to store some 200 books plus an entire dictionary, giving readers the physical support they need to fully enjoy an e-book. Kindle also comes equipped with wireless support which can be turned off when the user is on a plane and he can download books without commitment charges or other contracts directly through Spring Nextel's EV-DO connection. It features a keyboard for browsing web pages and looking for downloadable books, page-turning buttons on each side of the screen and it weighs 10.4 ounces. Surprisingly, it does not have a backlight to reduce battery use, but Amazon claims it reads just like normal paper, even in direct sunlight. The Kindle will cost $399 and most books will be available at $9.99 in the so-called Kindle Store, which currently features more than 20,000 books. The gadget also has built-in access to Wikipedia.org and can download books in less than a minute so its users have access to information whenever they need it. Kindle is apparently intended to replace paperbacks and lead readers into an age when annotations will be made only by keyboard, and not by pencil. The battery can keep the device running for an entire day with the wireless connection turned on, and for a week if the connection is off.
