Chris Cantell Discusses Technologies: Volkswagen going hybrid Claudia Sonea
No sooner Tesla Roadster got on the market that other car manufacturers started to announce production of models powered by lithium-ion batteries. This is a move that will help protect the environment reducing the emissions and assuring a better world for future generations. If only these batteries wouldn’t pose so many risks. Due to the brilliant discoveries of Nikola Tesla people can enjoy a cleaner air with the hybrid and electric vehicles. At the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show European automakers showed off with their models like Mercedes Benz who had 7 hybrid models among which one was electric, or General Motors who came up with an Opel powered by a lithium-ion battery, while Volvo presented its model using a lithium-polymer battery pack. Martin Winterkorn, the owner of Volkswagen, made public their intention to produce hybrid cars after the Frankfurt Motor Show. As a consequence of Nissan Motor Co and NEC Corp announcing future production of hybrid and electric cars using lithium-ion batteries, Winterkorn turned to Japan's Sanyo Electric Co in a partnership to do exactly the same thing. Yet, the motivation wasn’t just to fight competition, but also environmental as the nickel-hydrogen batteries are inferior to the lithium-ion ones that will reduce the weight of the car with 200-300 kilograms, while improving fuel efficiency and acceleration. The news was published in the Nikkei financial daily on Sunday and set 2012 as the date to which Volkswagen will start importing and using the battery in its hybrid and electric cars. Meantime, Sanyo and Volkswagen will roll out next year a model powered by nickel-hydrogen batteries that can be recharged repeatedly. All future models from VW will be constructed with hybrid concepts, according to article. So, stay connected and see great things taking shape!
