Chris Cantell Discusses Technologies: Samsung Instinct, dashing... by Claudia Sonea

Most of you have heard about the new iPhone model that Apple announced on Monday to be available in stores from July 11. The question is how many of you know about the product Sprint and Samsung offer? It is a must to know because it is very similar to the iPhone and will get even sooner on the market, 20 June. Called Samsung Instinct, Sprint’s phone has a touch screen and through few buttons offers a spectrum of features into a package. Samsung Electronics Co. is the author of the hardware and Sprint the one of the software, as for the design it is produced in collaboration with an outside design house on its development. Users will be able to use e-mail, Web browsing, GPS navigation, send text messages, watch videos, live TV, browse photos and listen to music. Samsung Instinct is better than the first generation of iPhone, especially when it comes to adding features. However, we still have to wait to compare it with the new 3G iPhone that uses AT&T's third-generation wireless network. Both Instinct and the iPhone have: fast data networks, with the first one using EV-DO Revision A, the fastest of Sprint's network; 2-megapixel cameras (Instinct has only 2Gb memory, but you can buy a cheap MicroSD); on-screen keyboard, connect to corporate e-mail servers and Microsoft Outlook e-mail programs. Now there are several differences that can be considered advantages like the fact that Instinct is smaller, fitting in a pocket; records video; offers picture messaging; vibrates when it registers a touch; live TV; send music through Bluetooth, etc. Its software is based on Java and since it will open to third party developers this feature will make the adaptation easier. Is this product going to beat competition of the new iPhone or the promised BlackBerry? Who can tell for sure? No one, it is just a matter that will be available at the end of the year. I am curios how much it will cost, but that I will find pretty soon, don’t go away…
