A unit of knowledge
by Barbora Misakova

After the fiasco with Yahoo! Inc. and Microsoft Corp., we had enjoying the silence. No Google, Yahoo or Microsoft at the cover of newspapers or magazines, no more disagreements, just few days of talking about celebrities and Hollywood. But it seems that while Yahoo and Microsoft are hiding in the shadows for a while, Google didn't stop working and prepared for us something new again. After 7 months of testing Google unveils his new project called “Knol”. So what is it for? If you know online encyclopedia Wikipedia, I think you will fall in love with Knol as well. This Google's project already includes hundreds of articles on various topics such as medical, geographical, historical and so on. When you check these articles you can find out that they are all written by capacities and professionals such as professors, physicians, dermatologists, and other people skilled in particular segments. But now, anyone who is interested enough could sign in and write own articles. As the Google says, the goal of the Knol is to “help you share what you know.” Articles can be written on any topic, you can use all resources you want, and you can also cooperate with other authors from the Knol. What catch my attention the most was the quality of all articles, so I would rather call them studies. Most of them (if not all of them) contains glossary, introduction, few chapters and the whole body of the article reminds me classical studies. Related pictures and various schemes which are in every article help you to better understand the topic. Besides articles themselves which have really high credibility I appreciate the whole look of a page. It is more than comprendious so you will have no problems with finding articles, signing in or reading the terms of use. But probably the biggest score of the whole page lies in identification. Everyone who is writing an article in the Knol has to create its own profile, where he fill his name, skills so the readers can assess the source's credibility and you can be sure, that the article information are true. If you are interested as I am, do not hesitate and click on http://knol.google.com. I think you will more than just like it.
