Chris Cantell Discusses Technologies: Google's new music search
by Claudia Sonea
You probably know that China has held today on the eighth day of the eight month of 2008 the opening festivities of the Olympic Games. Now, now, don’t get impatient thinking that this is another blog on Olympics, in fact I merely wanted to underline that China has many things to celebrate lately like the new music search service that Google announced on Wednesday.
It is necessary for you to know that China has another favorite web browser called Baidu.com which owns nearly 63 percent market share. As it is, you understand why Google with only 26 percent is taking steps to get the interest of Chinese people. After all it is the country with the biggest population and that means a lot of potential customers that now can download for free licensed songs. To kill two birds with one shot, Google will also receive advertising revenue that he will share with music providers and Top100.cn.
It is a smart move to cope with the music providers if we were to look at Baidu.com’s situation. The Chinese search providers are dealing with lawsuits because they allegedly give users the possibility to download unlicensed music thus violating copyright. In addition to that, Google also collaborated with Top100.cn co-founded by Yao Ming, a basketball star and tens of thousands of Chinese songs from this web site will be available for download. You just have to google your favorite songs by singer or song title.Advertising revenue from the service will be shared among Top100.cn and its music partners.
Google China President Kai-fu Lee stated that they are pleading in favor of peace between the Internet and the music industry because in China there is a high rate of piracy and that needs to cease. Will they succeed? Coming next…
