Internet on air
by Claudia Sonea
Airlines refuse to give in. They flexed their muscle one more time and come up with something that might save them from a shameful bankruptcy. There is no surprise for anyone that the fact that the soaring fuel price reaching record heights lead to a series of changes like merges (Delta and Northwest) or increasing fares. However, there was little success in their efforts, so now they turned to a very profitable business: the Internet.
As of Wednesday American Airlines, a unit of AMR Corp., approached the Internet industry and put on the table an offer of airborne e-mail, Web and other online services on some of its longer, nonstop flights. This is a smart move because it will bring revenue not only from the service itself, but also from the advertising. Just say good bye to
Magazines and travel books, welcome electronic browsing.
On June 25 was tested this service and because everything turned out to be a success, this month the airline offer is $12.95 per flight when traveling on 15 Boeing 767-200 planes between New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Miami. Taking into observation the success of the new service, Delta Air Lines Inc., Virgin America and US Airways Group Inc. are next on the list of airlines to launch in-flight services, while JetBlue Airways Corp. is already on the market with free Wi-Fi service through its LiveTV subsidiary, but only on one plane.
Don’t worry about making a subscription, because Aircell's Gogo is still in a test period, so you can either drop it or change it. The service is available on laptops, Apple Inc.'s iPhone, some models of BlackBerrys and other Wi-Fi-enabled devices. The Internet-based phone calls are blocked, so you can breathe relieved. There is still the problem of privacy and viewing adult content with children in the nearby seats, but there will be regulations formulated in the coming period, so don’t go away.
