Chris Cantell Discusses Technologies: Side effects
by Claudia Sonea
The financial crisis has hit US and there are signs of extending to Europe. There are serious reasons to be concerned, the credit crunch, the real estate market and unemployment are devastating economies, affecting various industries. The mobile phone makers and operators are also exposed, but the possible losses are hard to estimate and up to now there have been only pure speculations.
Analysts are the ones making estimation, thus scaring not only the average consumer, but also the investors. Blackberry-maker RIM is supposed to be dependant of Wall Street due to the fact that 40 percent of its subscribers are large corporations in the last fiscal quarter. However, besides the expansion beyond the bankers, there is always the certitude that few people would actually give up their cell phones in case of financial crisis and RIM's co-chief executive Jim Balsille thinks the same. No matter how poor one is, the cell phone is to last to be cut back.
As a matter of fact, the analysts contradict themselves by forecasting a 10 percent growth of the global mobile phone market and even mature handset markets are expected to grow, in spite of the sharp fell they encountered at the beginning of the year. Operator subsidies are most likely to influent future sales due to modifications of offers, but there is no evidence of being a negative or positive influence. I would advise patience and calm until newspapers around the world write about an actual collapse and not a speculated one. Stay connected and be in touch with information!
