Skype vs. German police
by Ludmila Martinicka

German police is facing a problem with decoding of the Skype calls, they are not able to monitor calls of suspected criminals or terrorists. The software is not easy to intercept due to its working system. Process is based on breaking up voice data into small packets and switching them along thousands of router paths. In traditional calls, the data flows constantly between two parties. The question about the way of decoding is, if it is better to get to the source before encryption or after it's been decrypted. German police didn't ask the company for the encryption keys and is not going to. High officer of the German police department said, there is no discussion with Skype. He also formulated his willing not to harm the competitiveness of any company by saying that probably no company would go for it. Skype is the calling software, which was created by entrepreneurs Niklas Zennström and Janus Friis. Skype allows users to make telephone calls from their computer to another on line users, to the landlines or to cell phones. Skype calls between two on line users are free of charge, for other types of calls user must prepay credits. Other features included to the program are chat, file transfer, video call, conference call. Security of the calls is a future of Skype. The encryption cannot be turned on or off. The user is not involved in the encryption process. The software is compatible with Windows, Mac OS X and Linux (i386 platform) operating system. You can find it also in new models of cell phones.
