Motorola one of the largest cell&phone manufacturers in the United States has found itself in very problematic situation. Even the famous Razr doesn't help to improve earnings. Last year company finished behind number one Nokia and number two Samsung Electronics. Cell & phone business doesn't work and this situation needs to be solved. Earnings are getting worse and also shares lose.Motorola see separating of the cell & phone division like the best choice. Although there are not any guarantees this step will help. On the other hand management of Motorola is sure that recovery is unable under existing structure. Today it is still not certain, if the company will solve the problematic situation with spin it off to stock-holder or sell of unit. Questionable is who would like to buy company with such a bed state in a market of the third generation phones. One of the companies that could have interest is LG Electronics, number five on the market and big rival. Its strongest side is a partnership with Verizon but it is only a weak player in the technology used by AT&T and Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile. Another potential interested person is Nokia or small Asian firms, which are ready to play in a world of wireless services. Possible acquirers are Huawei Technogies or Lenovo Group. Question is how much are these companies able to invest in this project.Another strategy will be tried inside the company. It will refer high costs, which need to be reduced. There is also problem with the people that don't know how to run technology.

Looking for signal? "Don't bother; the cables are damaged again'' would be the answer of a Qtel customer. On Sunday, telecommunications provider Qtel announced that an undersea telecoms cable linking Qatar to the United Arab Emirates was damaged, disrupting services, this being the latest incident of this kind in less than a week. Last week in the Mediterranean and off the coast of Dubai the cables were damaged so bad that both the Internet and international telephone services in Egypt, Gulf Arab states and south Asia were disrupted. Also, according to Qtel's head of communications Adel al Mutawa told AFP on Friday between the Qatari island of Haloul and the UAE island of Das the cables went through a rough situation on Friday. Furthermore, the company has not yet found the reason for so many failures of the cables. He added that Qtel's loss of capacity had been kept below 40 percent over the weekend due to Qatar's large number of alternative routes for transmission. Tracking the incident the UAE telecommunications watchdog revealed that the disruption to Internet and telephone services in the Gulf state is most probably to continue for 10 another days. On the site of UAE telecoms provider "du'' there was a post saying that the owners of the Mediterranean cables, FLAG Telecom and SEA-ME-WE4, were fixing the damage, there is no accurate date for when it will take place, but the fixing of the FLAG cables will take about two weeks. It has already started transferring Internet and international voice traffic through other cable systems that are still standing and have not been affected in any way; however, the chances are that at peak times until the issue is resolved to remain without signal. Fortunately other UAE's other telecoms provider, like Etisalat, and Saudi Arabia's STC have not been affected. It is expected on Tuesday for a repair ship to begin work to fix the two cables in the Mediterranean Sea that were damaged on Wednesday, thus causing the disruption of connections not only in Egypt but also thousands of kilometers away.

New York wants out-of-border companies to pay sales tax by Lenka Filipova

It seems that online companies which are located out of New York borders will pay tax imposed on goods which are delivered to New York's addresses. This is aimed in the plan proposed by Gov. Eliot Spitzer. His estimations assumed that the state could receive $47 million if state sales tax is collected. This estimation arises in the case of tax cumulated from Internet major companies like Amazon.com. However, this radical change is highly criticized by the Amazon's vice president of global public policy, Paul Misener. He told that all companies that are concerned with this, would definitely withdraw from anything that was being done anywhere in the country.This policy appertains to these companies which are not rooted in the state but have at least one person who is acting as an online agent in New York. The state sales tax has already been imported on online shopping for the "brick-and-mortar" companies. This law is admission to those once that have sales of $10,000 or more. In addition to this, the state Department of Taxation and Finance has already prepared a list of all companies which do not have physical basement in New York but are doing online business.Since the law has been announced publically, more and more states have joined to collect sales taxes from out-of-border companies. 17 states are the part of it already and another five is prepared to join too. As a result of this dramatic change, the tax law adjustment will be provided so that it coincides with legislation. This law conversion will be done on local as well as state basis.

Although I have never held it in my hands I know what it is. BlackBerry is a wireless handheld device which supports e-mail, text messaging, internet faxing, web browsing and of course other basic features that has every mobile phone. This little thing for everything was developed by Canadian Research In Motion (RIM) and introduced in 1999. For its color display and built-in keyboard which enables to the users write their e-mails quickly and easily this little device became quite popular. In 2007 RIM announced the number of 8 million subscribers.If you belong to those who need to be always connected, need to know about every new e-mail received and are too impatient to read them at home, you will like BlackBerry device a lot. This Monday a three-hour outage was caused and users of e-mail services couldn't send or receive any e-mail. Many of customers using it for voice calls had to be nervous too because their, usually working devices, were for nothing. This e-mail outage which was, by the words of RIM, caused by an upgrade for increasing capacity affected only users in North America. This is not the only case when RIM had problems with system. In April their minor software crashed and in September another disruption was caused by the glitch of their software. Experts think the main problem and reason of all outages which RIM has is in the centralized structure of their system & when the problems are there million of users can be affected. NOC & Network Operations Center is a place where all sent e-mails from users of BlackBerry come and then they are redistributed from there to the recipients. Who do you think you can blame for not being able to access YouTube Web site and see your favorite videos? Well, the entire blame falls on Pakistani Internet service providers that blocked the popular site across the world at the weekend when they restricted local access to the site, according to YouTube statement on Monday. Many users around the world could not access the site for about two hours due to a routed traffic created by erroneous Internet protocols. YouTube was blocked by Pakistan because it was running material insulting to Islam, a Pakistani industry official said on Sunday. An anonymous official said that this initial order to restrict local access might have inadvertently affected users around the world. Meanwhile, everyone in Islamabad on Sunday that tried to access YouTube received a generic error message saying the site was unavailable. All is well, that ends well. YouTube removed content deemed insulting to Islam and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority on Tuesday lifted the prohibition. They said that the interdiction was necessary in order to avoid unrest in the overwhelming Muslim country of 160 million people. The material most probably had to do with the publications of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammad from Danish newspapers in 2005 that sparked widespread anger and deadly protests in several Muslim countries, including Pakistan. Furthermore, last Tuesday, in the eastern city of Multan city 150 students staged a rally, burning Danish and U.S. flags to express anger over the reprinting of the cartoon. That proves you just can't joke with a man's faith and beliefs. It is a good thing that YouTube removed the insulting material and did not continued to broadcast it. A fair deal after all among honest people.

Scientists released first draft on Encyclopedia of life, which contains every available information about all living organisms on the Earth. Authors are planning to have detail information about all 1.8 million known animal species and plants after the completion of the project. They also have already set up 1 million placeholder pages. Each specie will have its own web page in an online archive. It will also include photographs, genetic information and distribution map. "Identifying species correctly is critical. Cataloguing species and monitoring concentrations of known species or their appearance in new locations is vital, for example, to monitor the impact of climate change," said Graham Higley, head of NHM's library and information services. On Tuesday were released first 30,000 pages focused on fish, amphibia, large mammals and birds. "This is a great event," said Lord Robert May, a former president of the Royal Society who is an adviser to the project."It will help us to sort out all the different species and create a single consistent database." Help for researchers was also Wikipedia and its revolutionary use of software, that aggregates vast amounts of data from different sources. Also helpful were The Natural History Museum of London, the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew and the Smithsonians Institution in Washington. In this project were used about 2.5 million pages of ancient academic journals and all the pictures, drawings and photographs were scanned into computer. It is also possible, that encyclopedia will include links to video clips taken from TV programmes. The Encyclopedia of Life is one of projects, that are trying to record a life on Earth, driven by the knowledge that many species are near extinction. There are many reasons like habitat destruction, climate change and exploitation.

They are set to launch on Tuesday a more energy-efficient machine suitable to compete with high-end computers from rivals such as Hewlett-Packard Co and Sun Microsystems Inc (JAVA.O) that it is in fact an update of its powerful mainframe computer. You probably remember that the last update took place in 2005 and this new one although features an all-in-one computing framework for processing volumes of data for customers such as banks, insurers and retailers like all other older models, it is how International Business Machines Corp recounts more power-efficient and secure, dealing two main concerns as data-center energy costs soar and security threats mount. The new machine is called System z10 and starts at just under $1 million. What will you get? A 50 percent faster machine than the predecessors, the z9, up to 70 percent more computing capacity and according to IBM a more energy efficient computer. The z10 machines have the computing power of 1,500 standard business server computers, but are smaller and 85 percent more energy-efficient than such a server cluster. IBM's core product and a long a reliable source of revenue was from software and services required to run them, but now they are focusing on mainframes as the company moves to higher-profit technology services and software. The company expects a lot from the new mainframes, especially due to late losses they had fourth quarter: mainframe revenue fell 15 percent (customers waited for the new model before upgrading), from hardware fell 3 percent to $21.3 billion, accounting for 22 percent of IBM's total revenue of $98.8 billion, Chief Financial Officer Mark Loughridge said on a conference call with analysts in January. HP, Dell Inc (DELL.O) and Sun Micro represents real competition with less expensive server computers, whose top-line server computers cost more than $250,000 and perform many of the same functions as IBM's mainframes. But David Gelardi, vice president of industry solutions for IBM's systems and technology group, said in an interview that even though it is more expensive, it pays off and will definitely be a product to be proud about. Mobintech is a Danish group. It might be it has solved a problem of the mobile industry. It has come up with a solution of how to put television and video services on a tiny screen of cell phone. The problem usually is the small size of the screen, so that user doesn't see the smallest objects. The solution is a pair of futuristic glasses. It can be connected to the mobile phone. After connection user feels like he is watching a 30-inch what is 76 centimeters TV from two meters distance. Vuzix is the US-based group, which came with a similar idea. They predict increasing number of users of secondary screens. But it will depend on design of display glasses. Europe and Australia are two big continents which are quite far from each other. If you travel from Europe to Australia, you have to be prepared that you will spend about twenty hours in the plane and flight tickets are expensive as well. In the past if somebody left from one continent to another one it meant leave and not come back. But today there is different situation. Imagine that you would be supposed to be in Australia in less than five hours... Do you think that is impossible? You are wrong! It is possible today. How? We can say thanks to British engineers whose presented plans for a hypersonic jet. The plane called A2 is designed by engineering company Reaction Engines based in Oxfordshire, southern England. The A2 would be 143 metres long that is about twice the size of the biggest jet and could carry about 300 passengers at a top speed of almost 6400kmh that is five times the speed of sound and twice the speed of Concorde. Passengers wouldn't have any windows but I am sure that designers would invent something instead of it, idea is to put screen televisions there and people could have impression of seeing outside. From Brussels to Australia flight time would be about 4 hours and 40 minutes. I think that it is amazing! You can go just only for one day trips to Australia. Of course, it isn't cheap. The price of flight ticket is about 3,500 pounds that is about 4,700 euros and 6,900 dollars. It is like today's first class ticket so it is not so bad.Now, the important question is if the world is interested in it and wants it because it is possible technically so it is up to people to decide it.

New York wants out-of-border companies to pay sales tax

It seems that online companies which are located out of New York borders will pay tax imposed on goods which are delivered to New York's addresses. This is aimed in the plan proposed by Gov. Eliot Spitzer. His estimations assumed that the state could receive $47 million if state sales tax is collected. This estimation arises in the case of tax cumulated from Internet major companies like Amazon.com. However, this radical change is highly criticized by the Amazon's vice president of global public policy, Paul Misener. He told that all companies that are concerned with this, would definitely withdraw from anything that was being done anywhere in the country.This policy appertains to these companies which are not rooted in the state but have at least one person who is acting as an online agent in New York. The state sales tax has already been imported on online shopping for the "brick-and-mortar" companies. This law is admission to those once that have sales of $10,000 or more. In addition to this, the state Department of Taxation and Finance has already prepared a list of all companies which do not have physical basement in New York but are doing online business.Since the law has been announced publically, more and more states have joined to collect sales taxes from out-of-border companies. 17 states are the part of it already and another five is prepared to join too. As a result of this dramatic change, the tax law adjustment will be provided so that it coincides with legislation. This law conversion will be done on local as well as state basis.

Outage in BlackBerry

Although I have never held it in my hands I know what it is. BlackBerry is a wireless handheld device which supports e-mail, text messaging, internet faxing, web browsing and of course other basic features that has every mobile phone. This little thing for everything was developed by Canadian Research In Motion (RIM) and introduced in 1999. For its color display and built-in keyboard which enables to the users write their e-mails quickly and easily this little device became quite popular. In 2007 RIM announced the number of 8 million subscribers.If you belong to those who need to be always connected, need to know about every new e-mail received and are too impatient to read them at home, you will like BlackBerry device a lot. This Monday a three-hour outage was caused and users of e-mail services couldn't send or receive any e-mail. Many of customers using it for voice calls had to be nervous too because their, usually working devices, were for nothing. This e-mail outage which was, by the words of RIM, caused by an upgrade for increasing capacity affected only users in North America. This is not the only case when RIM had problems with system. In April their minor software crashed and in September another disruption was caused by the glitch of their software. Experts think the main problem and reason of all outages which RIM has is in the centralized structure of their system & when the problems are there million of users can be affected. NOC & Network Operations Center is a place where all sent e-mails from users of BlackBerry come and then they are redistributed from there to the recipients. That's why if any type of problem appears here it has impact on every single user of BlackBerry. Maybe they should start to think about some solution & just like Microsoft has. It sends e-mails directly & from server to user's handsets.
