Chris Cantell Discusses Technologies: Promising Wireless USB
by Claudia Sonea

Most of you who own a computer hate the eternal jungle that lays in the back of your computer due to the numerous cables that links the peripherals to the motherboard. Even more dream to a computer that works without cables and the wireless technology seem to be the one fulfilling everyone's dreams. After Wi-Fi and Bluetooth now we have UWB (ultra-wideband). It is similar to Bluetooth because it works at a short range, about 30 feet, but it is much faster according to the computing industry moguls. The UWB doesn't promise to eliminate all the cables made of USB (Universal Serial Bus) hubs, each of which has four ports for regular USB cables. Only between the wallet-sized hub and the computer there is no cable and if you want to use it, you simply plug the peripherals into the USB hub and connect the UWB dongle that sticks into a USB port to your laptop. However, the connection is good only at very short range (it can penetrate a desk), because at a longer range you have to maintain a straight line. Furthermore, the promise speed fails expectations. The USB hubs from Belkin International Inc it's better than the one from Iogear Inc., being faster than a Wi-Fi, easier to set up and use, with a stable connection, but with the mention that it works only on Windows. Nevertheless, a fix connection is still far better when regarding the speed. There are many questions concerning the UWB like if certified Wireless USB gadgets from different manufacturers will be able to communicate between each other. The challenge comes from Bluetooth that wants to create a high-speed of that version which uses UWB. Also the real desire of the researchers is to have UWB chips and antennas built straight into peripherals and computers. Will that happen soon? Who knows!until then enjoy the Belkin version.
