Notebook sales have topped desktop figures worldwide
by Corina Ciubotaru

According to a recent study, Hewlett-Packard is leading the race for PC shipments this quarter, increasing the advantage over next competitor Dell on the worldwide market. In the third quarter, Dell sold 10.2 million computers worldwide and rose 3.8 percent, far behind the market's rise of 15.5 percent. HP on the other hand had a rise of 33 percent on its worldwide shipments while global sales of computers rose to 66.9 million from 57.9 million in the third quarter last year. Apple came in third on the U.S. market, with only a 15.9 percent increase and it was the first time computer manufacturers sold more laptops than desktops. This was not so good news for Dell, whose lineup of notebooks wasn't that hot lately but the company is planning a comeback through a new series available in their partner's shops. One of the world's fastest growing markets for computers has been EMEA, i.e. Europe, Middle East and Asia, where HP and Acer are leaders. The latter is one of the fastest-growing companies, with over 60 percent more computers sold in the last year than the previous one. Asia/Japan is also a booming market for portables, which sell 60 percent better every year and have Lenovo as market leader, followed by HP and Acer.In the U.S., the top five computer vendors are Dell, HP, Apple, Toshiba and Gateway, according to both IDC and Gartner research firms. Analysts believe the fourth quarter will also present very strong growth and so will the next couple of years.
