Qwest introduces 20 megabit DSL in some areas Radka Konkolova
On Thursday, the big phone company, Qwest, introduced its plan, which included also providing the faster download speeds. The company charges from 52 to 105 USD for using the Internet with 12 or 20 Mbps of download speed. It is cheaper when using also the local phone line and services.
Management of the firm awaits to 2 million customers on 23 Qwest's top markets in the end of the year. But using of DSL Internet with higher speeds is limited by network of optical fibers. Because Internet can be used without any troubles only in the areas, where the local phone company has drawn its optical fiber closer to customer's homes. So that is the reason why Qwest want to spend up to $300 million. It is to draw the optical fiber into the neighbourhood and it means upgrading its network. Also AT&T company has spent such a large amount to upgrade providing TV services over the phones.
Another phone company, Verzion Communications, Inc., decided to use different resources to expand its fiber network and Internet, and its fiber Internet should have download speed about 50 Mbps. Therefore they want to draw fiber into the customer's home.
Not only phone, but also cable companies have been trying to boost speed of data transmission, what is significant for example in Minnesot's Twin City region, where the cable company, named Comcast Corp., has introduced 50 Mbps service, what has meant customers for Qwest as well, because thanks to Comacast Corp. and their cables, they can provide their 12 or 20 Mbps Internet better there.
