Rumors or fact
by Claudia Sonea
On Tuesday, The Wall Street Journal posted on its Web site details of a deal between Sprint Nextel Corp. and a group formed by Comcast Corp, Google Inc, Time Warner Cable Inc, Bright House Networks, Intel Corp., and Clearwire Corp. Still, none of these cable companies and Internet leaders have made public such a deal and there are only mere supposition that they will do it on Wednesday morning. It is a deal that involves a $12 billion investment in the creation of a national network using WiMax technology (the Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access- a technology delivering wireless broadband access) instead of cable or DSL. One of the largest telecommunications companies in the US will merge one of its products, WiMax, with Clearwire, a wireless broadband Internet service provider available in the United States, Ireland, Belgium, Denmark and Mexico. The new company will keep the name of Clearwire, but will have Sprint as the majority, according to the posting. The cable companies had a project with Sprint called “Pivot” that failed because it involved co-branded cell phones that lacked marketing and operations control which WiMax will give them. In addition this technology offers faster download speeds than cell-phone networks and is even better than DSL. Funding was the only part missing from the project, but that was solved too with Comcast investing more than $1 billion, Intel $1 billion, Time Warner Cable of New York $550 million, Google $500 million and Bright House's contribution is $100 million. What The Wall Street Journal reveals is that Sprint wasn’t the first choice and talks between cable companies and AT&T Inc. and Verizon Wireless took place. Good thing for Sprint that the talks were unsuccessful, that is if indeed the deal happened.
