Are you ready to get smart?
by Claudia Sonea
We never seem to have enough gadgets or enough conversations and movies about them. The technological area has not affected our interest in them as the modern era affected novels with pirates and others. Going back in time 43 years we assist at the first episode of the American comedy television series “Get Smart” which satirizes the secret agent genre. Now, they are launching a new season and they are expecting to have a lot of audience. Although it may be difficult for them to take us by surprise as nowadays there are so many gadgets that you could hardly believe to be real, I am pretty sure their success will be mostly due to the fact that they are really funny and comedies are in high demand. Before anyone could posses a mobile phone, the satirical show took as by surprise with the shoe, a spy gadget which at that time was a technological marvel. Matt Ember, who co-wrote the script confesses that the purpose of the show it is not actually the atonement, but rather to exaggerate and make fun, while the new writer Tom J. Astle adds that the greatness of all is the fact that now the gadgets are real. So, what are we going to see new at Maxwell Smart, Agent 99 and the other spies in the “Get Smart” show launching next week? A tiny iPod, a two-way tooth radio that the writers found in a magazine, a digital "spy fly" that is also a gadget available to purchase for the amazement of Director Peter Segal. After James Bond opened the trend, it just became unstoppable and the good thing is that Cold War-era secret agents entertain us still. Today, the purpose is not to boost about the inventions, but to underline our obsession with them. After all we surf all day for the latest gadgets and students have even found a way to use it as a mean to cheat. Probably all those who skipped studying for the exams will be thrilled to be truants and stay in front of the TV to watch: GET SMART!
