Chris Cantell Discusses Technologies: Analysis finds TV buyers steered to costlier LCDs
by Radka Konkolova

I think almost every man wants to make his or her life better, easier and comfortable. Sometimes it is not as easy, but sometimes it is enought when you have time to enjoy something on TV. And because you want to spend your free time by amazing experience, it is possible to you thinking about the quality of your new TV.

Recently the most mentioned, developed and demanded are two types of television screens. The first one is plasma screen and second one is LCD which means liquid-crystal display. I think it is very difficult for average or ordinary person, who doesn’t know much about these miracles to decide which one is better. There are some ways to figure out this question. For example you can find some information on Internet because there are several sites which include comparison of those two devics in order to help routine user to purchase good and staple thing he will be very satisfied with.

Another way how to detect the features and pros and cons of both is to pay a visit in a shop selling electronics and ask employees. But this is not always the best way, because of possibility of garbled information from their side. According to one study made by J. D. Power and Associates, the most of sellers would advise customers to buy LCD instead of plasma. Probably they think plasma is not as stable (as it was few years ago), consumes more energy, the picture can be blurred and colours are not as bright and beautiful. But this is not true. You just have to know what to purchase. I am not an expert, but I have read some reviews about both types of screen and I can tell opinions significantly differ. Thus one praises display with liquid crystals and the second one praises plasma. I have met the situation when in one comparison was written that LCD has got sharper picture and in other one exact contrary. So truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

You should compare them on your own sight in a specialized shop when buying or before buying. I have almost forgotten, there are many various TV sets in various price level, but you should look at the quality of the product, what is very important thing in this case.

I certainly prefer and would choose plasma instead of LCD because there are some much more better features. Only one problem could be the price because plasma is more expensive than LCD and also the size can be a problem for someone. Plasma has been developed as a technology which should be used for showing TV programme in very high quality. To contrary liquid-crystal display was developed to be a display for calculators etc., and which offers quite good quality of images but only in static shots, but when watching something dynamic, pictures are blurred. So you can be sure about the stability and quality of the view of plasmas, because it is impossible there to be blurred picture when there is faster shot. Very important parameter is also the consumption of energy. LCD always uses the same quantity of energy. On the contrary, plasma needs more energy when there are some brighter shots and less when playing darker ones, but on the average it is almost the same as by LCD. It uses special technology, so you can notice that black pictures are much more darker than on the LCD are, because liquid crystals absorb some rays of light, so there is grey instead of black. The screen is still „shining“ and therefore the view and colours are not as sharp in my opinion.

Both TV sets are flat-panel, so you can situate them almost everywhere. So another important thing is how the shots look like from various angles. Also in this case plasme is better, because you can watch your favourite programme from the different places of your room and you will still enjoy it without any damages. But on the other hand, when watching on LCD, you will also see view in quite good quality, but bigger angle worse watching.

I think it could be thanks to the prices, but more popular these days are LCD screens and producers are focusing mostly in this direction. For example Sony has stopped production of plasmas, Samsung Electronic and Matsushita Electric Industrial still make both kinds and Pioneer has announced it will stop manufacturing the displays and will buy them from Matsushita instead.

In my opinion some people have realized that when they want better quality it is better to spend more money to plasma TV instead of LCD. But problem is that plasmas can’t be produced in size with diagonal smaller than 37 thumbs because of the resolution which will come with worse quality of image, depth, brightness and quality of colours.

So now it is only up to you how to decide when purchasing new flat-panel TV, in order to be satisfied with it...
