Apple's iPhone on sale in Belgium
by Livia Cseresova

If you want to buy one of Apple Inc.'s popular iPhones in Belgium, you can do so from 11th July. Like in many other markets, it will include tight caps on wireless data that top out at 1GB. But this combination of iPod and smartphone will cost you quite a lot of money, since Belgians will sell iPhones at one of the highest prices in the world.

The 8-gigabyte iPhone in Belgium will cost more than four times as much as in the U.S., where it costs $199. The Belgian price is 525 euros, which is approximately $825. The 16-gigabyte version is also much cheaper in the U.S. – its $299, in comparison with Belgian 615 euros - $966.

The Minister of Enterprise in Belgium, Vincent Van Quickeborne, blamed a local law that bans companies from supporting a product by charging more for something else.

He expressed his will to try to change this law in September, since it stops telephone operators from selling handsets not so expensively, just as fixed service contracts, as is common in many other countries. If we go just to Belgium’s neighboring country, Netherlands, we will see that Dutch customers can pay just 1 euro, which is $1.57, for an iPhone if they choose a contract with T-Mobile operator.

Mobistar, which is the Belgian iPhone carrier, says it isn’t afraid about not enough customers, in spite of high prices. It is expecting huge queues at shops in Brussels on Friday, when the phones go on sale.

It is very interesting that even rich customers, who can afford the high price and would want to buy more that one iPhone for themselves, will not be allowed to do so during the first few weeks.
