Changes
by Livia Cseresova

Times are changing. Nobody can deny it. And because of it, the students now are completely different that the students years ago. For people who start going to college this year, everything digital is completely natural.

For them, people born mostly in 1990, there have always been cell phones with caller ID, GPS system and homosexuality was not considered a disease anymore, as they grew up. “The Tonight Show” has always meant only Jay Leno for them. Simply, they grew up and have lived differently than the previous generations.

A private school near Wisconsin-Illinois state line- Beloit College is releasing a Mindset List on Tuesday. The list is an annual compilation offering a sight at the world as seen by every new class coming to study to the College.

The list was started to be written in 1998 and its purpose is to remind the lecturers that some things, which they know very well, might not be familiar at all to their students.

The director of public affair of the college, who puts together the list said: “Watergate used to be a common reference. But a few years ago I asked some students if they knew what Watergate was and they said that was where Monica Lewinsky lived.“

Just compare the future class of 2012 to previous generation. To the class of 2012, Nintendo Game Boy, karaoke machines and other have always been there. But when you say IBM typewriter they might just stare at you blankly. See?

According to English professor at Beloit, Tom McBride, the goal of the mindset list is not only helping professors to update their references, but “It also prevents students from thinking that the way something is now is the way it's always been. “
