Chris Cantell Discusses Technologies: Scrabble or Scrabulous?
by Livia Cseresova
Scrabulous is the name of a very popular Facebook game. It´s an unauthorized version of a well-known Scrabble game. Now, the creators of authorized Scrabble decided to weigh in and compete with Scrabulous, which has approximately half-million users per day.
Jayant Agarwalla co-created Scrabulous because he couldn´t find and online version he liked and he believes that “people should have the option of playing what they like, rather than be forced by developers into using something they offer only for monetary gains."
On Monday, Electronic Arts said it would release a Scrabble application, which Facebook users can add to their profile pages. It´s obvious that EA wants to profit from Scrabulous´ success. The spokeswoman of the company Trudy Miller said EA's offering´d be "an authorized, licensed Scrabble game experience that people familiar with Scrabble can instantly recognize as Scrabble."
An important limit of Scrabble is, however, that only U.S. and Canadian users will be able to play it as EA has a deal with Hasbro Inc., which owns the game's North American rights. According to Hasbro, it´s not a problem, though, since players usually live in the same country, given the linguistic differences.
EA is attempting to make Scrabble popular also on other places- it was made available on Pogo.com site and sold to Apple Inc.'s. Mark Blecher, general manager for digital media and gaming at Hasbro said the backing of major companies means better reliability, technical support and production values.
The unauthorized version became so popular because it´s free, easy to play and to access on Facebook. Scrabulous´ fans even made a “ Save Scrabulous” Facebook group.
Blecher claims there were discussion with Scrabulous´ creators about possible cooperation. But Hasbro still finds Scrabulous a violation of its intellectual property, and is evaluating its legal options." Jayant Agarwalla refused to comment on the legal conflict.
