A new rival
by Claudia Sonea
Dear customers, Research in Motion Ltd. presents you the new touch-screen phone: the Storm. In analogy with its name, the cell phone promises to ravage the market getting in the competition with the iPhone (AT&T), Samsung Instinct (Sprint Nextel Corp.), and the G1 (T-Mobile). It also marks a crucial direction in the industry that has as the starting point the iPhone.
Up to now, the above mentioned company has built up a reputation based on its Blackberries focusing on e-mail and featuring large keypads. On Wednesday when the launch of Storm was confirmed after many rumors, they also offered information regarding the large screen replacing the physical keypad which is similar to Apple's iPhone with the difference that has springs as feedback to the pressing of the virtual buttons. Thumb up for that and also for working both on Verizon Wireless' network and on Vodafone's (the carrier offering it overseas). The Storm will have radios that will handle both networks, thus it will have the advantage that the iPhone already has: international roaming.
Cell phones makers noticed an increase demand of large corporations’ employees for a touch-screen phone and that is why the main focus is now on that. Web browsing and movie playing are responsible for the iPhone’s fame; however it could also be a disadvantage for Storm due to the lack of a similar service to Apple's iTunes movie store. Due to the late wave of European countries like Germany, Norway, Finland and others, the iTunes might become more accessible, so that might loosen up the competition. Stay connected and soon you will even find out the price of the Storm and if it fits your budget.
