Fake sites playing tricks on search engines
by Magdalena Rosova
Search engines can be full of Internet scams. Con artists can very easily get top billing information out of search engines and sell them to fraudulent Web sites. This way they make companies such as Google, Yahoo and Microsoft their accomplices without realizing it. Online cheaters pretend to be legitimate companies and try to lure people to give them their personal or financial information. They use e-mails or messages in forums such as Twitter or Facebook. Moreover, security researcher Jim Stickley proved that search engines can also be cheated by shady schemes. Stickley made experiment with Credit Union of Southern California when he created new Web site purporting to belong the Credit Union. With the knowledge of how search engines rank Web sites he achieved that his site got a No. 2 ranking on Yahoo and No. 1 in the Microsoft's Bing, ahead of the union's real site. However, Google did not fall into Stickley's trap and he never managed to get higher than sixth p! age of results. Google also places warning that the site might be spiteful. But Google itself say it an uneasy thing. Jason Morrison, a Google search quality engineer, said that some scams slipped into Google's search engines, but that number is very few. One kind of fraudulent site has got phony articles which claim that one can earn thousands of dollars a month when posting link to certain Web sites. Victims are often asked to pay for startup materials or give bank account information for payment purposes. Morris say that once they recognize the scam, they will adapt. But it is impossible to remove every singe scam from the Internet, he added.
