FCC to organize an auction but no one knows when
by Zivka Deleva
The U.S telecommunications regulator, Federal Communications Commission decided to organize new auction this summer for airwaves that didn’t make it last year when there was a spectrum auction. We are talking about the D-block, which includes 700 megahertz band of the airwaves which were valued at about $19 billion, when in 2008 other blocks were sold to carriers. Telecommunication companies are waiting intolerantly for the Commission to come up with its terms and condition, so they will know what to offer. The term “early summer” is still only a pale frame, because the Commission officials still haven’t set dates. It is very possible that the auct! ion which is meant to be organized for commercial purposes, off course, will take place not sooner than one year. Analysts say that this kind of auction would be very much welcomed for smaller carriers like, T-Mobile, so it can fight better with giant companies like AT&T and Verizon Wireless. This auction would be very important because the FCC cam finally bring a decision for one national wireless communications system for police, ambulances or firefighters. That is very important, because these categories could not communicate among each other during the terrorist attacks on September 11, and the Hurricane Katrina, as well. The Commission’s biggest interest is to create efficient public net for public safety workers when it is going to be necessary. For that, the Commission is planning to ask some money from the Congress, around $12 billion and $16 billion, during a ten year long period. The Federal Communications Commission is so called “independent agency! ” of the United States government. The majority of its c! ommissio ners are appointed by the president of the country. So, how independent this agency is, what do you think?
