Microsoft at the gate of smartphone market.
by Milota Sidorova

Times when Microsoft ruled the world have gone. Although being the largest software selling company, the touch with the market and customers is what Bill Gate's former company is missing. And it seems it wants to catch up with rivals – Apple, Research in Motion and Google on new and promising market branch of smartphones and tablets. It's been true that Microsoft paid attention more to its traditional products just like Windows and while it probably created the best version of Windows ever, it is still not enough to compete. Microsoft holds around 5 percent share of current mobile market. According research firm Gartner, it fell down from 9 percent previous year, but! Gartner also said the climate in the company had changed and it was willing to sell around 270 million smartphones this year. That would doubled current volume. Its PC worldwide sales should rise „only“ 19 percent to 368 million units. Microsoft's shares are equal to 2002 value after it has fallen about 20 percent this year. Who is ruling the market, Microsoft aims to enter? It is Research in Motion with its Blackberry that is sold for around $200, then hot candidate Apple's iPhone 4 that despite lacking major changes and improvements from iPhone 3 has been selling well and again its price is about $200-$300. Another players in the game are Google and Nokia. Google, the creator of Android operation system has released Motorola's Droid X and Samsung's Galaxy series. Nokia's Symbian is a no 1. used platform. Microsoft can offer only a software based on Windows – the hardware is running via Samsung, Motorola and HTC and operator will be again – AT&T! . But they are having Apple, RIM and Google as well. So Micros! oft can be only a small player, unless it shows up with really powerful strategy.
