PC revolution
by Claudia Sonea

Watch out there is a new computer in town, the lime-green-and-white XO laptop computer made especially for children in developing countries. Isn't it great to finally have something that will teach children how to use the century's miracle device? Although its primarily use is for children's aid, the expectations are to revolutionize the PC industry by introducing a new era of low-cost computing. The computer's production just started, according to a non-profit group called The One Laptop per Child Foundation statement on Tuesday. This group was started in 2005 by Massachusetts Institute of Technology professor Nicholas Negroponte and in collaboration with Taiwan's Quanta Computer has started the mass production at a factory in Changshu, China. Uruguay and Mongolia are already on the list of demands and US and Canada will have a holiday program which involves the acquisition of the laptop at a price of $399 (191 pound) with the bonus of another laptop for an overseas child. Negroponte said the XO will be used as textbooks by children in the elementary schools. He added that the laptop will use as operation system free Linux software and the impact on the industry is already visible. The publicity created by him through talks with world leaders and with the public led to the launch of a new class of low-cost computers for a market broader than school children. Also, there are concerns that it might take business from commercial products, prompted companies, including chipmaker Intel Corp and software maker Microsoft Corp, to boost investment in developing countries. Pakistan's Allama Iqbal Open University ordered 700,000 Classmate PC developed by Intel for the education market in developing countries and cost around $200. Furthermore Taiwan's Asustek Computer Inc released the Eee PCs a line of notebook computers for children and women at a price of $245, depending on the country. So the idea of special notebooks for a certain category of age or sex has a fertile ground and the cost is not that much. What are you waiting? Go now and acquire it while it still has a low price. Enjoy it
