Technology competition with new Ubuntu will be tougher
by Nina Gotzmannova

Canonical Ltd., a company most known for the promotion of free software, has another ace up its sleeve. Their product, Ubuntu software, is attacking its rivals in a technology fight. The toughest war will be probably with Oracle, one of the major software companies.Oracle has developed Oracle Enterprise Linux, an operating system designed to compete with Red Hat, another primary software company. But Ubuntu from Canonical seems to be too big bite for both Red Hat and Oracle. Since Canonical supports the free software distribution, Ubuntu is able to operate and work with various types of different software products. For the developing market of free software is this attribute a key factor. But for the hardware vendors it may be a problem. It's not easy to certify and trust something that can be rebuilt, refill or renew with completely new software. The "versions" of the final program might be uncountable. However, the support from these dealers is the only thing Ubuntu is missing on its final winning way and the only one supporting major system builder is Sun Microsystems. On the other hand rivals of Ubuntu said they provide only one version of the software. Canonical supports Ubuntu with lots of its commercial products to make it more attractive to the general public. They also try to convert mistakes of their competitors into Ubuntu pros. Red Hat, for example, offers a fixed applications suitable mostly for desktop users. Ubuntu allows the users to choose what they need and leave out the rest, but in case of need they can download it again. The new version of Ubuntu named Gutsy Gibbon will also include a special anti-hacker technology called App Armor. The release date is 18 October 2007.
