Napster Balances Rival iTunes Milota Sidorova
Balancing the negative side of (till very recently) one handed swing of digital music industry, it's believed that Napster, Boston based file sharing service will become the biggest download store. It's green cat logo smiling down on the visitors while Tuesday's store opening suggests several revolutionary changes. At first, all of currently summed 6 million songs will be slightly downloaded in MP-3 file. ''More compatibility!'', says Napster's platform. Finally they took advantage of millions of pissed up subscribers, complaining about inability of playing their music somewhere else than on its home devices, as it is for example in the case of leading giant iTunes.Despite of paying for the songs, DRM (Digital Rights Management) Fairplay abandons tracks from being played on another devices except of iPod! Pretty annoying, indeed.Napster has moved from under the DRM platform. However, most of the major labels were worried about non-protection policy, current situation where dozens of billions tracks are downloaded every day, it is necessary to take risk. Universal compatibility can be (in final summing) only significant progress. Finally all major labels and thousands of independent labels signed down the contract.Changing its strategy from monthly subscriptions, Napster has declared its firm price list. One downloaded song will cost exactly 99 cents while the price of one album was defined on $9.95.The tracks will be portable and compatibile with all kind of devices, even iPods. This way, iTunes, that extended its portfolio buying Wal-Mart (WMT-N.) online shop corporation, offering a wide selection of products ranging from electronics, entertainment, apparel, toys, and jewelery last month, gets real chief rival. Napster will join nascent lines of digital music stores like Amazon and News Corp's (NWSa.N) social networking site MySpace.
