EU pushes open-source standard as „smart business“
by Ivana Macakova
On Tuesday the EU called the government to use open-source software which was developed by Microsoft Corp. European Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said that government should made the choice about using this type software first. And after it they could forced or encouraged other users to choose between closed technology and open one. According her European Commission shouldn`t rely on one seller and it should deny using of a particular technology. The first open software was developed by the OASIS industry consortium which madeOpen source software was developed as an alternative to a commercial software. OpeDocumentFormat. OpenDocumentFormat is a software which every user can implement without any fees or any restrictions. OASIS was followed by Microsoft Corp who developed Office Open XML, or OOXML. OOXML was approved in April as an international technology standard. It was the step which allowed IT departments and governments to use it. To care of OpenDocumentFormat Microsoft said it was limitated by features and performance of OpenOffice.Critics of OOXML said it defend to other competitors of Microsoft, because it forced the customers to buy Microsoft programs forever. We should keep in view when we buy any program it`s the long-term cost because we are often locked-in a following version of technology.Companies should be clear that the patents shouldn`t become a part of a standard. This new technology formats are often without paying any fees, it can be freely distributed and Kroes named it a „smart business“.
