Impact of hurricane Ike
by kristina leskova

Can you imagine the power of a hurricane? I have not experienced any hurricane in my life. But I know that this kind of natural disaster is very dangerous and that it changes the people’s lives. The last known hurricane was hurricane Ike. It started on the coast of Africa in the end of August and it became a tropical storm on September 1. Ike was the fifth hurricane in the 2008 season. On September 4 its power was 233 km/h. It caused lot of damage, nearly 30 billion dollars. The effects of hurricane were huge, because Ike damaged a huge area of the United States. He moved through Bahamas, Cuba, Florida, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and Ohio. Many people had to be evacuated and many of the citizens died. The hurricane damaged many houses, caused landfalls, and devastated the crop. In Texas many of the oil refineries were closed. This caused an increase in the prices of gasoline, home heating oil, and natural gas. Several areas in Illinois and Indiana were flooded; the strong wind damaged many buildings and trees. Some of the airports had to be closed due to power outage. There was also the widest internet outage since the year 2003. August 2003 is known for the northeast blackout which caused power outage of Northeastern and Midwestern United States. Many people stayed without internet connection, but I think that internet was the last thing which were people thinking of. The hurricane caused serious damages and many people lost their home. The hurricane Ike persisted 2 weeks.
