Trust, but verify!
by Barbora Misakova
Day after day I am realizing that we are really living in a bad and rotten world. Some people are living in their wealthy castles and houses they bought for millions of dollars and then there are people who are living in completely different world. They live in the poorest living conditions, hardly to have something to eat, fighting every day to save their lives and lives of their children. We live in the world, where people must leave the place they were living all their lives, just to protect themselves and their families. But even though they came to new country, where is no war no genocide, they are not protected. On the other hand – they are abused and cheated again!
The latest news about prepaid calling cards sold in the USA make my blood boil! Imagine you desperately need to make a phone call. You are new in the US, you have no money, you can hardly speak English, but you know that the most important thing is to call your family that you are alright. So you buy some calling card - $5 is not so much, and you have at least certainty that you can make a 20 minutes phone call. But after your first call you find out, that the certainty you had before is gone. 20 minutes you paid for changed into 10 minutes you can use on your phone call. Is it real or just some kind of joke? No. It’s real. You became a victim of calling card fraud. On the card market there is incredible number of these calling cards. Some of them are delivering less minutes then they were promising, some of them charge extra fees (for example when you are calling on a cell phone), some other cards are offering lot of minutes, but you must use them in a single call (of course no one told you about this term of use). If not, the minutes will start disappearing! But these cases are still better than the incident which Rosalba Posada had with them. She bought a calling card and when she wanted to use it just few months after buying it, she found out it is already expired!
I could continue with stories of other people who also became the victims of this incredible calling card fraud. But it would be worthless. I think that the number of $4 billion is saying everything about this kind of industry. Until the government makes order in its own country, I have only one advice for you – trust, but verify!
