Another Chance
by Claudia Sonea

There are some things in life worth dying for. Independence is one of them. There is no doubt about the fact that we need the others for love, for communication, encouragement, advice, yet what really makes us happy is the freedom to take our own decisions, love and befriend whomever our hearts desire, to be independent. Living in a society doesn’t kill the longing for independence, it all enhances it. As it is, how does a person who has been diagnosed with Alzheimer really feels like? Alzheimer is a disease that starts with the memory loss and gradually develops leading to confusion, irritability and ! aggression, mood swings, language breakdown, long-term memory loss and finally ending up with the self-exile. Frustration comes from not being able to remember anything about one’s own identity, one’s location, the constant dependency and feeling of being a burden for the loved ones. The Alzheimer's Association thought to give back to people their freedom of movement, while assuring their families about their whereabouts with a new technology that became available starting last week, called Comfort Zone. The Web-based application works with tracking transmitters in order to communicate the location of the person with Alzheimer within the perimeter ser by the family, thus giving them the possibility to be reached by phone or to be picked up in case the person gets lost. Omnilink Services will offer a monitoring service with various plans for all budgets, so that people can afford to get back their independence. Moreover, the devi! ces can be adapted as the disease progresses and needs change.! The bes t thing that technology was ever used for.
