Google: new war started?
by Barbora Misakova

Two months ago, the information about Google’s troubles with Chinese communist government, flied around the world. Internet giant has said it may end its operations in this Asian country following a cyber attack originating from the country. As Google announced, e-mail accounts of Chinese human rights activists were the primary target of the attack. Google’s will to stop censoring its Chinese search engine – google.cn – was beyond all questions. Even beyond closing the site and Chinese offices. Market leader Baidu has about 60 percent of the market while Google has only 31 percent. That’s why Baidu questions Google’s decision to quit for ! human rights issue. Chief architect of Baidu thinks it is for financial reasons. But what if Google is really sick of this constant censorship? Google launched google.cn in 2006 and even though they agreed to some censorship, today it seems like they just betrayed its company motto – don’t be evil. That’s why Google announced Monday that it has stopped censoring its Chinese-language search engine. As Google chief legal Officer David Drummond said: “Earlier today we stopped censoring our search services – Google Search, Google News, and Google Images – on Google.cn. Users visiting Google.cn are now being redirected to Google.com.hk, where we are offering uncensored search in simplified Chinese, specifically designed for users in mainland China and delivered via our servers in Hong Kong.” While in January they were thinking about leaving China, now the Internet giant plans to continue research and development work. Let’s see wha! t will happen. I have to admit I am very curious what the reac! tion of Chinese people will be like!
