Call me anywhere!
by Milota Sidorova
EU politics aim to push a right for internet into the constitution and assure basic internet broadband connection for every citizen in upcoming years. Basically our planet is going to be covered with signal access in its every corner. Big project, extraordinary project, one would say. Try to imagine, you would be able to phone or get internet access even in the desert, in the mountains or in the sea. Of course there would be total technology revolution behind this basic service. However, trend is moving. Recently it was AT&T offering first phone that works through its own network using a satellite. Shortly, it means this phone will get continuous connection from every cor! ner of the U.S. But some limits will work here, just in the case of GPS – phones will have to avoid the trees, buildings or hills or put the other way – they will have to find clear Southern sky – the direction on which the satellite passes. AT&T assures only a coverage include the U.S. while Iridium Communications Inc has a global spread. The phone costs $799 if bought without a two-year contract, but still includes regular AT&T voice and data service. The customer will have the possibility to use it on normal broadband or to switch to satellite, but this service will cost extra $25 per month and calls will be more expensive in average 65 cents per minute of calling. Internet services will be also more expensive, indeed, almost sky high – one megabyte costs $5 that is up to 400 times more expensive than usual service.
