Although Microsoft is still a part of Big Tech five (or five most influential companies leading the global technology market), its position has been threatened. Was it just Apple and Google getting more and leaving Microsoft far behind? No, the first reason was that the company had focused on its traditional product line far too long. A crucial mistake was that Microsoft didn´t enter mobile phone and tablet market earlier, or at least earlier than Apple or Google. Technological and marketing gap resulted that Microsof has been perceived as a company that lost the touch with clients. And the company has acknowledged it – no wonder it´s on a frantical chase t! o release mobile phone software Windows Phone 7. Although it doesn´t have their own hardware and rely on Samsung, HTC that produce phones themselves, they offer software. Once again greatest rivals come from Apple and Google that has launched its Android platform quite successfully. And while it´s no doubt that there is nothing better than Windows 7 between Microsoft products, it´s not clear whether i tis better than already established rival products. What´s more is that the same hardware producing companies (Samsung, HTC, etc) have been already producing mobile phones with Android. So one producer is having at least two solutions. This may be a great mental setback for customer trying to buy a phone according to its design, not the platform. And this is the thing Apple has been so anxious – to be at least presented as the one and ultimate owner of hardware and software. Microsoft Windows Phone 7 is going to be offered via AT&T that has alread! y promoted and sold iPhones and Androids. So Microsoft has to ! push rea lly hard to make it clear that it is the right choice for AT&T as well as for customers.
