Android is a mobile operating system initially developed by Android Inc., a firm purchased by Google in 2005. In July 2005, Google acquired Android, Inc., a small startup company based in Palo Alto, California, USA. At first it was known that they are making software for mobile phones. But at the same time rumors about Google entering mobile phone market began. These rumors followed in the next years until finally in 2007 Google filed several patent applications in the area of mobile telephony. In November that same year Open Handset Alliance was established and Android, the flagship software of the alliance was licensed in 2008. Based on an open source license it competes ! against mobile platforms from Apple, Microsoft, Nokia, Palm, Research In Motion, Symbian and Bada. Today Android smartphone in one of the most popular and best selling smartphones. Actually newest report showed that it sold 20,5 million units, giving the Android platform a 25.5 percent market share. It made him the second biggest smartphone platform after Nokia's Symbian. Apple’s iPhone is third with 13,5 million units and Canada's Research In Motion, maker of the Blackberry, was in fourth position with sales of 11.9 million units. Android’s team succeed to make innovation fast enough so it can put this product high on the list. Because in this market that is what you need to stay in game. Technology is going forward very fast and you need to keep a sight with it, otherwise new and better competitors will surged past you.
