Marc Andreessen backing new social networking oriented browser RockMelt by Zuzana Zelenakova

Marc Andreessen is best known for his involvement in the development of the first widely used web browser Mosaic and also as a co-founder of Netscape Communications. The man who “helped bring the World Wide Web to the masse” is now, 17 years later, introducing a new browser called RockMelt, which is based on the latest trends in Internet technologies, particularly the phenomenon of social networking. "We're reinventing the browser for how people use the Web today," said Eric Vishria, RockMelt's co-founder and CEO. "The market is ripe for new ideas and better products," said Andreessen. "What's exciting is how dynamic the market has become. Nearly 500 million pe! ople have changed browsers in the last three years. Back when I was working on the browser, there weren't that many people on the Internet." The new browser incorporates social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter so you can take your friends along as your surf the net. The browser, which will be available Monday, also keeps an eye on the user´s favorite websites notifying when there is a new content added. RockMelt was developed by the former colleagues of Andreessen Tim Howes and Eric Vishria. However, Andreessen´s support and advice has been a very important factor in the development process. In addition, Andreessen´s firm contributed generously as far as financing is concerned. "When you are trying to reinvent the Web browser, who would you rather run your ideas by besides Marc?" said Howes. So far, no browser has been as successful as Microsoft´s Internet Explorer. Although it faced some challenge from Mozzila´s Firefox it still cover! s about 60 percent of the market. Firefox is currently ranked ! second w ith 23 percent of the market, it is followed by Google´s Chrome with approximately 9 percent.
