RIM to fight for its leading market position
by Milota Sidorova

Last Friday didn't work out for Research in Motion as it was expected, on the contrary, according to some observers, it turned out to be rather bleak. Shares of Waterloo, Ontario based company went down more than 3 percent as a result on move of Bank of America and Citigroup. Both financial institutions announced they were turning away from RIM's most popular product BlackBerry. This smartphone has been used not only for common customers, but widely also for company' employees. Smartphone with internet access and good services for data operations allowed many employees to get to the corporate email, for instance. And BlackBerry was used as „corporate“ smartphone! in some really big institutions for long time. Bank of America confirmend its official report it was going to look for some of BlackBerry's rivals, Citi, however didn't make any further comment. According to James Cordwell, a London-based analyst at Atlantic Equities, companies could save money in supplying BlackBerry' services. But this seems to be just argument on argument, since Mark Guibert, RIM's senior vice-president of corporate marketing suggested it wasn't actually saving cost movement, but the desire to gain „free, little attention“. Statistic however, confirm that the times of BlackBerry as leading corporate smartphone may be slightly over, according to a recent survey, Bernstein Research found 83 percent of U.S. businesses allowed employees to use non-BlackBerry alternatives to access corporate email. Bank of America has around 290,000 employees, Citi employs some 258,000, but this wasn't the last „loss“ for RIM. The day before Dell sa! id it was planning to replace 25,000 BlackBerry smartphones fo! r any ot her alternative. Market results are decreasing, now is the time RIM needs to answer.
