Spacewalks delayed
by Claudia Sonea

The space shuttle Discovery launched by NASA on 23 October this year, on mission STS-120, has the goals of delivering module Harmony and reconfiguring a portion of the International Space Station in preparation for future assembly missions. The first one was completed successfully; however the latter gives them a hard time. There were scheduled five spacewalks in order to make the necessary configurations and possible repairs. The one that was due on Thursday was canceled a day before by NASA, because to the problem they has with the rotary joint for the solar wings on the right side of the space station it was added the issue of a ripped solar wing. The two power problems are competing for the small amount of time left of the Discovery's mission which was already extended with one day. Besides the fact that future missions will be delayed, there is always the misfortune to not finish in time the orbiting outpost before the space shuttle must head back. After Hubble Space Telescope, Discovery is the first one fulfilling such a mission that involves five spacewalks. It is a record in the 26-year history of space shuttle flight. The second female commander of a space shuttle, Pamela Melroy stated on Wednesday that her crew is ready to fulfill whatever the ground orders them, even if the mission is extended and another spacewalk is added. The canceled spacewalk should have been performed by astronauts Scott Parazynski and Douglas Wheelock with the purpose of inspecting a malfunctioning rotary joint that keeps the station's solar panels turned toward the sun. The fifth spacewalk was due on Saturday for additional station construction, but there is no news on the matter. Usually there is a day break between each mission in order for the astronauts the get some rest and prepare the space station. There is a must to repair at least one of the issues in order to be able to support the new European lab that will be delivered in December by Atlantis and the new Japanese lab that is scheduled for February, next year. NASA engineers couldn't find out the causes of the wing's damage despite the fact that astronauts took hundred of pictures of the wing tear; nor the causes of the rotary joint malfunction couldn't be identified. Until further discoveries, the right joint will remain in a parked position as much as possible in order to limit power collection. Stay connected and keep in touch with space news.

Google vs Facebook
by Claudia Sonea

There are the names of two giants muscling one to the other. Google Inc announced on Tuesday that is setting up a distribution network for social networking applications. However, the new social networking platform won't be on the market until later this week. The main goal is to build a one-stop shop for software developers who create tools for sharing music, pictures, video and other personal interests on social networking sites. These tools are called widgets and are pretty famous since Facebook opened in May its Web site to accommodate outside developers who thanks to the 8000 widgets hosted has a worldwide audience of 50 million and a market value of $15 billion. Microsoft Corp. paid $240 million for a 1.6 percent stake of Facebook's Palo Alto-based company, trumping Google whose social network called OpenSocial expects to attract as many Facebook users as possible. The advantage Google has is that it hosts a lot of Web sites and the software developers will only have to code their applications once, while they will handle the rest. LinkedIn, hi5.com, Friendster and Ning, business software specialists Salesforce.com Inc. and Oracle Corp are some of the early participants. Also, three of Facebook's most popular Widget suppliers â€" Slide, RockYou and iLike will be on the list of developers feeding applications to Google. It is not a surprise, these developers offered widgets to hi5 too. Joe Kraus, a Google product manager stated on Tuesday that Google will certainly benefit from this. There is always the possibility of introducing ads. Google tries to get in the competition for a social network, after the existent Orkut seems to be appealing only to South Americans. Meantime, Facebook wants a piece of the advertising stake that Google holds. Therefore there is scheduled a meeting for its own advertising network on November 6. The rivalry between two giants is getting hotter and hotter, still until now Google leads by recently hiring away some of Facebook top engineers.

Who's getting BEA ?
by Corina Ciubotaru

Software giant Oracle has retracted its offer to buy Middleware producer BEA after BEA declined an offer of $6.7 billion. It appears they want to get $21 per share while Oracle is believed to be able to pay up to $27 per share and still make a profit out of the deal. But now, shareholder Carl Icahn caught word of the actions and decided he would convince the other shareholders to accept the Oracle deal, by using his 13.2 percent stake in BEA. So far, managers of the middleware manufacturer have not been influenced by these threats, fueling speculations that they just postpone the deal until they get an exaggerated price, $1.5 billion more than Oracle's offer. Its other possible buyers are IBM and Hewlett-Packard, but Oracle boss Larry Ellison is not a man to give up easily. He has been negotiating this deal for three years now and he seems determined to do whatever it takes to get the slumping company, but BEA still doesn't seem to agree with the imposed offer of $17 per share. Officials in the company said they are looking into other ways to maximize shareholder value, and a purchase will only happen if they get their asked price. BEA's stock price fell again earlier this month to $18.94 after a five-year high and has stabilized at $16.5 on Monday. The question now is whether other companies interested in BEA such as IBM and SAP will have the guts and the money necessary to buy the company from under Oracle's nose.

A solar panel has been found to cause trouble on the space station
by Corina Ciubotaru

A routine check on the International Space Station ended up revealing a major problem. One of its solar panels seems to be in need of a fix since astronauts Daniel Tani and Scott Parazynski found metal shavings inside its rotary joint, the part that allows it to follow the Sun. Tani collected some of the debris using tape and will send it for analysis, as scientists at NASA want to know if it comes from the aluminum inner foil of the joint of some other parts of the panel. The problem came to attention after a flight controller noticed the solar panel was producing strange vibrations and used up too much energy as it rotated. This check was added last week to the two spacewalkers' mission and the findings were never expected to be this serious. They also attached a module called Harmony that would allow Europe's Columbus laboratory and Japan's own scientific lab to be linked to the Space Station in the following months. Another mission might be necessary to pull off the 21 covers of the other joints in the solar panel system and check for problems before other components of the station are added that would require much energy. For now, this joint will be fixed in a parked position until scientists solve the problem. The space shuttle Discovery is scheduled to return to Earth on November 6th after a series of photos proved it was in good condition. The current space shuttle fleet will be retired in 2010.

Contesting traffic ticket
by Claudia Sonea

Officers' word weights a lot in a court and that is why drivers would rather pay up their fines than contesting them. However, Roger Rude, a retired deputy has made up his mind and contested his step son's traffic ticket by opposing a police officer's radar gun against the accuracy of the GPS tracking device. He openly admitted that his stepson likes to put the pedal to the medal, therefore he and his wife decided to install such a device- a global monitoring system showing the car's speed and location- to the boy's car, a Toyota Celica. Despised by Shaun the device proved to be very useful for contesting a fine he received on July 4, when he allegedly drove with 62 mph in a 45 mph. Nevertheless, the GPS showed Shaun was going the speed limit within 100 feet of where a Petaluma officer stopped him for speeding. Even though the court rarely accepts GPS as evidence because they are not very reliable, there have been many cases of contesting traffic ticketing like the one of an Australian farmer who succeeded to beat off the fine. Jim Baxter, president of the National Motorists Association says that the GPS at least offers an alternative for the one-sided procedure used until now. On Shaun case a Sonoma County Commissioner will rule within next two weeks. Rude will came up with scientific data and expertise if the argument will not be successful at the first attempt. Furthermore, this is an opportunity to show both Shaun that truth prevails and to parents that it's a good idea in surveying their children in the matter of cars. David W. Brown, a Monterey lawyer and author of Fight Your Ticket in California says there are few chances to succeed without hiring legal experts. Still he says it is not impossible. Will they succeed? Stay connected and track up what happens next...it may come on handy.

Women conquer space
by Claudia Sonea

There has been a complete revolution in women’s position in society and attitude of men towards them. The right to vote was the first step in demonstrating that nothing is impossible. Now they broke the line and there already women who conquered last frontier- space. Space shuttle Discovery is one of the three operational spacecraft in the NASA’s Space Shuttle fleet. US used it both for missions concerning research and International Space Station assembly. On October 23 it was launched with the mission of delivering the Harmony module that provide electrical power, bus electronic data, and act as a central connecting point for several other components. Also another goal is to reconfigure a portion of the station in preparation for future assembly missions. The crew is formed of: Pamela Melroy- commander, George Zamka- Pilot; Scott E. Parazynski- Mission Specialist 1; Stephanie Wilson - Mission Specialist 2; Douglas H. Wheelock- Mission Specialist 3; Paolo A. Nespoli- Mission Specialist 4. On Thursday, 25 October, Discovery was parked at the space station by the captain who was praised for the marvelous work she done. She was the first one to enter the space station and there she was greeted by the first female to command a space station, Peggy Whitson, the station's skipper. In order to check the ship’s belly for launch damage from ice or foam from the fuel tank, Melroy directed it for a 360-degree backflip while the station photographed it. Although a piece of ice shook lose at the moment of the liftoff scratched the fuel-feedline hatch on the bottom of the shuttle, no harm was produced, according to John Shannon, chairman of the mission management team. However, he added that there still have to be performed some analysis to be definitely sure that Discovery has suffered no damage. Clayton Conrad Anderson is an American engineer and NASA astronaut who replaced Sunita Williams on June 10 as a member of the ISS expedition 15 crew. Now he will hand over his post to Daniel Tani who will spend the next two months on the space station. Astronauts Scott Parazynski and Douglas Wheelock will perform the first of the five spacewalks in order to unload Harmony from Discovery and link it to the space station. Also will remove a broken antenna and send it back with the Discovery. Pamela Melroy is after Eileen Collins the second woman to command a space shuttle mission and the third woman selected as shuttle pilot. Furthermore, Peggy Whitson, who is commanding the ISS Expedition 16 crew that will receive STS-120, is the first female ISS commander. It is the first time that two female mission commanders are in orbit at the same time.

Vonage is in for troubled times in the VoIP world
by Corina Ciubotaru

A recent find by a security firm called Sipera can potentially worry Vonage users. It seems that hackers can intercept and divert calls to their liking and callers would never know. They also risk spam, spoofing and Denial of Service attacks apart from eavesdropping, as the company does not encrypt voice conversation packets; attacks can be easily performed by anyone interested, as programs that capture unencrypted packets and reconstruct them are available free of charge. Even though the find has been made public a month ago, Vonage has yet to comment on the measures it will take to solve the problem; that is, if it will take any measures at all. It has to deal with other problems also concerning its service, as AT&T has announced it sued Vonage for patent infringement regarding technology allowing users to connect to standard phone lines. The two are trying to resolve the matter outside of court, as the Internet phone company has been getting used to doing lately; it paid $80 million to Sprint Nextel after losing a trial and settled with Klausner Technologies after agreeing to license patents used in Internet voice-mail services. All of these troubles made Vonage shares fall by 15 percent on Monday and deepened its financial crisis so the future doesn't look all that bright; being the best-known VoIP provider in the U.S. and a thorn in AT&T's side will only mean more lawsuits are ahead. Latest numbers from Vonage show its revenue for Q2 amounted to $206 million, compared to AT&T's $30.1 billion revenue in Q3.

FaceBerry.
by Barbie Kunkelova

Hooked on your Facebook profile? We've got some great news for you & now you can take it with you on a BlackBerry anywhere you go! (Yes, you might want to purchase a BlackBerry smartphone now). Thanks to this device, you can enjoy the familiar Facebook environment - optimized for your phone. You can send and receive messages, view the wall posts and pokes or accept new friend requests. There is also the possibility of viewing your Facebook status, updating it or viewing the status of your friends. Also, to send an invitation to a non-Facebook-member is possible. Want to upload a picture to your wall? No problem, just snap a photo with your BlackBerry, post it and even comment on it. Manage events, photo albums… Want to compose a message? This feature is available also offline! All these advantages serve well the phone's nickname & CrackBerry. BlackBerry owners become so used to receiving an e-mail the second it is sent without the access to a personal computer that we might as well call them addicts. The last thing social-networking was lacking, was mobility. That is over now. T-Mobile will be the first operator in the U.S. to benefit on BlackBerry's e-mail capabilities and to offer the Facebook experience. With Facebook becoming more and more popular, this acquaintance was a great idea. From Wednesday October 24 on, the software is available (via either PC or BlackBerry) at the website www.facebook.com. Go for it!

Comcast keeps too close an eye on its users
by Corina Ciubotaru

Privacy has become a major concern for everyone nowadays and people have started to feel watched everywhere they go. We have video cameras in shops and on the streets, our mobile phones can be traced through satellites and the RIAA is watching our every move when it comes to file-sharing. Not to mention phones being legally tapped; now it looks like Internet traffic is being supervised directly by the ISP. Comcast has admitted it delays and even blocks some traffic when the network gets too crowded, as an AP test proved. When faced with the evidence, Comcast officials admitted using certain programs that disguise as users downloading a file to prevent it from actually downloading. This technique targets mainly programs like BitTorrent and Gnutella, some of the most widely used peer-to-peer software programs and Comcast believes it to be perfectly legal and in the interest of the consumers. There is evidence out there that even larger attachments on perfectly legal e-mail sent with programs such as Lotus Notes have been delayed or blocked by Comcast. The company is known for its strange policy of rejecting users that take up too much bandwidth, so limitations wouldn't be a surprise to anybody. They are also likely to blame the delays on software bugs, anything to confuse users into not going to court. Since it's one thing to let users know how much bandwidth they can actually use and quite another to choke their connections, Comcast may not be facing a series of lawsuits regarding its reasons for influencing users' traffic.

I think, therefore I am notable.
by Barbie Kunkelova

Respect is earned, never given. And so are the Wikipedia entries. One has to accomplish something (with a large, capital S) in order to appear in this world's largest encyclopedia. Personal profiles are not allowed, so you can not simply go ahead and flimflam your friends (after one night of praising yourself and making a breathtaking online portfolio) by saying you're the first person among them who made it to Wikipedia. That's just not how it works. Wikipedia is operated by a non-profit organization (Wikimedia Foundation). It is multilingual, but only in the English version the content is being reviewed and approved. Today it contains, according to Wikipedia itself, over 8.29 million articles! The advantages of Wikipedia over printed versions of encyclopedia are: one just plugs in the key word and gets a selection (!) of connected articles. If one doesn't understand a certain term, it is possible to click on it and do further readings. Plus, if one is not totally satisfied with article's contents, there is another feature &it is usually possible to edit it. The entries are always up-to-date because it is in the interest of 6.8 million of registered users to provide the most relevant and reliable pieces of information. However, there were many reasons for a special site, WikiScanner, to be created. Many companies, according to FOX News, for example Wal-Mart, CIA, Microsoft, ExxonMobil, AstraZeneca (a drugstore) and Vatican changed the entries in Wikipedia's articles. WikiScanner simply reveals all changes by linking them back to the intruder's computer - and getting their IP address. As the creator of WikiScanner, Virgil Griffith puts it; he created it only to "create minor PR disasters for companies and organizations he dislikes" (FOX). His "brainchild" can scan all Wikipedia's articles written since 2002. Every treasure needs a bodyguard.

Comcast. the Almighty
by Claudia Sonea

It's amazing Internet providers have all the rights in the world, while average consumer has to obey their rules and accept whatever comes. Take for example the Comcast Corp situation, the company interferes with the intentions of their subscribers that want to share files through eDonke, Gnutella and BitTorrent networks. The accusations of data discriminations are exaggerated, they don't care about the shared data, but about the speed of the Internet of the subscribers. The Associated Press through nationwide tests has proved that whenever users try to share files through BitTorrent, just before the completion the connection breaks and a message comes from the other user (although he did not send it) saying he has to cut the connection. It is said that it breaks the principle of Net Neutrality which means Internet providers can not offer preferential treatment. Comcast is the largest US cable TV operator and second Internet provider. According to spokesman Charlie Douglas no application is blocked, but measures have been taken in order to assure smooth Internet connection. Despite the fact that it's deceptive, the company has the right to manage its network as Matthew Elvey, Robb Topolski and Paul Tony Watson- Comcast subscribers- acknowledge. Most companies are forced to appeal to such methods because according to a survey this year by ipoque GmbH the file-sharing accounts for 50 to 90 percent of the Internet traffic overall. Provided that the BitTorrent's president and co-founder has noticed the blocking, he suggests to invest more money in finding ways of improving the Internet speed rather than spending with technology to block file-sharing networks. Is it illegal? Well, in 2006 AT&T agreed not to implement preferential treatment for the Web companies willing to get more money from their pocket, due to the fact that the Federal Communications Commission granted the acquisition of BellSouth Corp. So this way the Net Neutrality was born. However, they did not state they will not prioritize traffic based on its type. Since Comcast is doing preferential treatment based on traffic type, nothing can be done; even less because they don't acknowledge doing it. It's legal, but immoral. We are still victims and no law for those that hold the power. Stay connected…how much can you enjoy?!

Accessories for iPhone are practical, not only nice
by Nina Gotzmannova

Do you belong among those people, who invite new Apple iPhone with a big celebration? This maximally practical device combines phone, MP3 player, camera and many more together in one simple and sleek design. No more full pockets, iPhone is everything in one. And this fact leads to confusing results. People will buy only one thing, but with ten accessories. Colorful ‘socks' to protect the display, headphones in several different colors to match with the sock and maybe even plastic cases to the gym to match with the dress. Everything is possible. Unlike iPod, iPhone has one disadvantage. The owner operates the device by touching the sensitive screen, but the screen is used to watch the videos and pictures too. Fingerprints on the screen are nothing surprising, but they ruin the pleasure from watching and look quite messy to the owners surrounding. That's the reason lot of companies offer accessories they do not only look pretty and have mostly decorative function, but also protect the iPhone. That are things like screen cleaners, iPhone cases or sleeves and sport-cases. Most people use their iPods and iPhones during workouts or in the gym and they want to keep the iPhone out of sweat, dust and dirt. They can use a sleeve, which goes around the arm and allows the carrier to work out without worrying if the iPhone is safely in the pocket. For non-sporting users there is a simple iPhone case, which protects the gear from the usual dirt or dust in the streets. Both accessories are made in many colors to fit all the personalities of iPhone users.

Microsoft catching up with Google?
by Barbie Kunkelova

Even though there is much much more information on the Internet than in anything else in the world (try to stuff all that into an encyclopedia), it is still faster to find the exact piece of information you're looking for. The world's most popular search engines are: Google, Yahoo! and MSN. Only in the US, 56.5% of the total of searches is done through Google Search, Microsoft's MSN/Live Search takes up only 11.3% of that total. However, the statistics also tell us that Live Search has been visited by 37% of all searching surfers. What happened to all the people? Why did they leave Microsoft's page? In order to attract more customers, Microsoft had to come up with a brilliant new idea that catches customers' attention and creates an opportunity cost against the competition: Microsoft's launching idea was to provide advertisement according to customers' age, gender or salaries & to understand user queries better. Of course, there is a huge difference in expectations when "Porsche for sale" is researching a 45-year-old businessman or a 16-year old teenager. The German agency PDA informed about the year 2006's 30% increase of the market of addresses of companies that are be available for the online searches & that will be $ 6.9 billion. According to The Register, Microsoft unveiled the new updates on its Search engine updates on September 26. Also, they are planning to upgrade their system every twelve months. The company now states (after 2 years of effortless experiments) that their search is finally equally efficient to Yahoo! Search and getting very close to Google's level. All this improvement will be available to American web surfers on Monday October 22. To sum it up, Microsoft is not worried about searchers leaving its pages. It is confident thanks to the amount of page's visits and believe the upgrade will discard Google.

IT business will grow with a speed of light
by Nina Gotzmannova

Everyone who is using a computer, cell phone or other electronic device with operation software has unwittingly ‘given' work to hundreds of people in IT business. Those entire computer specialists were needed to develop the device, the software inside the device and to bring the body and the inside together to bring it to the market. And the number of people working in the IT business will in the next few years grow with the speed of light. According to a study released on Thursday, the computer technology will cost an unbelievable amount of trillion dollars this year. But the growth of IT business is not something reserved only for United States of other big and rich countries. Study made in 82 countries and regions showed where the future of IT lies. And the place is not United States. Technology and IT companies employ 35.2 million people worldwide. The number will increase up to 25 percent in next four years, mostly in China. There will be also 4.6 million of new jobs in software-related jobs. Is it expected that most of them will be in Brazil, Russia, India or Mexico. Country with the fastest developed software-related jobs is surprisingly Azerbaijan, followed by Russia and Vietnam. Most of the jobs ‘belong' to Microsoft or its partner companies. Exactly 42 % percent of people working in IT business see the Microsoft logo on their paychecks. And some of them are really high. The sum of money that is moving in this industry is really colossal. For example, Singapore, Sweden and Denmark spend on computers and computer related products 2.6 from their GDP.

After September 27.
by Barbie Kunkelova

Black hat, expensive black suit with tiny stripes, golden tie, Hugo Boss shirt and shiny shoes. Accessories: black slim suitcase and out of the pocket… white strings leading up to both ears, notice the little bitten apple above the L and R... Behavior: (unacceptable for a person in Bratislava) nodding head, moving hips slightly from side to side and smiling brightly with eyes almost shut. Yes, iPod doesn't only create image, it also creates mood. Now that Apple came up with the innovated iPhone, you may also see people holding their iPods close to their ears and talking into them. But there is just never enough crap you stuff into your iPod, you always seek for more. Astrological predictions, weather for tomorrow, to-do lists, chess and other amazing games, editor of music, various backgrounds and program for the local movies & all this has been a major part of internet downloads during recent years. Apple owners felt cheated by so many 3rd-party accessories. They found a solution on September 27. It was a special software that enabled any kind of unofficial program on iPod. iPod an iPhone owners were infuriated and some charges were filed against Apple's monopolistic attitude! That's when Apple people decided to move in a different direction. They allowed a 3rd party company to develop a software kit that will allow all "iPoders " use their sweethearts in more desired ways without driving the makers crazy. This kit should arrive on the market in 2008 and also help sell more products.

Notebook sales have topped desktop figures worldwide
by Corina Ciubotaru

According to a recent study, Hewlett-Packard is leading the race for PC shipments this quarter, increasing the advantage over next competitor Dell on the worldwide market. In the third quarter, Dell sold 10.2 million computers worldwide and rose 3.8 percent, far behind the market's rise of 15.5 percent. HP on the other hand had a rise of 33 percent on its worldwide shipments while global sales of computers rose to 66.9 million from 57.9 million in the third quarter last year. Apple came in third on the U.S. market, with only a 15.9 percent increase and it was the first time computer manufacturers sold more laptops than desktops. This was not so good news for Dell, whose lineup of notebooks wasn't that hot lately but the company is planning a comeback through a new series available in their partner's shops. One of the world's fastest growing markets for computers has been EMEA, i.e. Europe, Middle East and Asia, where HP and Acer are leaders. The latter is one of the fastest-growing companies, with over 60 percent more computers sold in the last year than the previous one. Asia/Japan is also a booming market for portables, which sell 60 percent better every year and have Lenovo as market leader, followed by HP and Acer. In the U.S., the top five computer vendors are Dell, HP, Apple, Toshiba and Gateway, according to both IDC and Gartner research firms. Analysts believe the fourth quarter will also present very strong growth and so will the next couple of years.

Alert, digital bookworms!
by Nina Gotzmannova

Do you like the smell of old paper and old books? When you flip through the pages, do you remember the stream of adrenaline in your veins when you find something really old, forgotten or valuable in the bookshelves? Maybe you will continue on having these feelings in a new digital library of United States and United Nation will open soon. But only in a virtual world. In 2005 was open the Library of Congress. Since then people can read thousands of digitized records from cultures all around the world. This World Digital Library will be just an upgrade. According to UNESCO, in this library will be unique and rare materials from libraries and other cultural institutions around the world. Among books there will be manuscripts, maps, sound recordings, films or photographs. They will be accessible for everyone for free. People would be able to read the materials in six official United Nations languages & Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. They will have an option to search and browse materials by several criteria, such as place, time or topic. The project of digitalizing books and other materials has several advantages. People don't have to worry they wouldn't have place to store all the books they want to read, they will just save them on computer. They will be able to read whatever around the world, meet the books they are hard to find and access the library anytime or anyplace. The books are also safe in case of robbery, floods or fire. But there are also some disadvantages. If the server, where the material will be stores, would be hacked or would have some problems, it's harder to solve it. And one more ‘romantic' disadvantage & the book in the computer simply has no pages to rustle and no smell of old paper to feel.

Giant newborn.
by Barbie Kunkelova

Nevermind flying with private jets and maintaining a hangar for them. The new Airbus's triumph, the A380 was born, my dear ladies and gentlemen! It is a somewhat large baby boy. His hands can hold 72 cars each and his insides can stretch up to 500 km. Or 300 miles, if that seems less scary to you. He is also a very smart boy & after so many difficulties after birth (saw the light of the outside world 18 months later than other babies), he already made his first step! And it's not just an ordinary step; it's a giant leap for the mankind! He landed in Singapore yesterday at 10:40 in the morning; he made it all the way from Paris, what an incredible little man! And let's spoil the many of you here, the mommies & we'll talk about this baby's inner organs. Maestro Givenchy himself designed 60 custom-made sheets and 60 special flat screen televisions were constructed for the business part of baby's body. His corpus is divided into two classes & business and economy. Economy class consists of 399 seats but could fit in easily even 350 more! But we don't want to overpower the baby before it gets completely used to moving above the continents. A380 is, so far, solely Singapore Airlines' show-off (and they're so happy to be the launch-parents), but soon all parents will discover the evident benefits and many of them won't be able to resist. Some of the 100% parents-to be are Qantas from Australia. The next step for the baby will be the city of Sydney. And you, ladies and gentleman, can be there to support him & only a week from now!

Promising Wireless USB
by Claudia Sonea

Most of you who own a computer hate the eternal jungle that lays in the back of your computer due to the numerous cables that links the peripherals to the motherboard. Even more dream to a computer that works without cables and the wireless technology seem to be the one fulfilling everyone's dreams. After Wi-Fi and Bluetooth now we have UWB (ultra-wideband). It is similar to Bluetooth because it works at a short range, about 30 feet, but it is much faster according to the computing industry moguls. The UWB doesn't promise to eliminate all the cables made of USB (Universal Serial Bus) hubs, each of which has four ports for regular USB cables. Only between the wallet-sized hub and the computer there is no cable and if you want to use it, you simply plug the peripherals into the USB hub and connect the UWB dongle that sticks into a USB port to your laptop. However, the connection is good only at very short range (it can penetrate a desk), because at a longer range you have to maintain a straight line. Furthermore, the promise speed fails expectations. The USB hubs from Belkin International Inc it's better than the one from Iogear Inc., being faster than a Wi-Fi, easier to set up and use, with a stable connection, but with the mention that it works only on Windows. Nevertheless, a fix connection is still far better when regarding the speed. There are many questions concerning the UWB like if certified Wireless USB gadgets from different manufacturers will be able to communicate between each other. The challenge comes from Bluetooth that wants to create a high-speed of that version which uses UWB. Also the real desire of the researchers is to have UWB chips and antennas built straight into peripherals and computers. Will that happen soon? Who knows…until then enjoy the Belkin version.

New phenomenon: biological BlackBerry instead of biological clock
by Nina Gotzmannova

Some people have biological clock; they wake up in certain times or can exactly say what time it is. Nowadays, some people who have close relationship with they electronic devices, have a "biological BlackBerry" instead. They feel the vibrations of incoming call, message or e-mail or can predict when someone would try to reach them. It often happens to the people who are used to wear their cell phones on their belts or in their pockets. These technology addicts are reporting, they are feeling vibrations like from a cell phone even when there is no cell phone attached to their bodies, such as in shower or in their pajamas. They try to grab the vibrating tool realizing, there is nothing that can possibly produce the vibrations. Only their body. There is still no research about this phenomenon, since the spread of mobile technology and these devices is only in the last few years. Anyway, some theories called this phenomenon "ringxiety" or "fauxcellarm". It is compared to the phantom limb, when people without an arm or leg still feel pain in the missing limb. These fake vibrations often happen to people from technology circles, which are connected to their devices 24/7. But they don't take it as a bothering or chronic problem, they are proud about it. Mostly they are the group of people who first noticed this phenomenon and let the world know about it. And their comments about what's going on are sometimes funny. One of them says, if there is not a tumor growing in his leg, everything is fine, another swears his phone began to dial numbers automatically when he put it into his chest pocket instead of trousers pocket. But all this only reminds us, that the world of mobile technologies is more mysterious than we think.

IP mapping.
by Barbie Kunkelova

"The IP address that you are currently using: 55.684.93.131 has exceeded its reasonable usage limit and has been temporarily blocked from accessing this…" Familiar? Just like every human being on the world is unique, so is each electronic device. But due to some numbers, not personal qualities. Exclusively the ones who use the Internet & and possess an Internet Protocol address, also known as IP, the basic protocol for sending data over the Internet. Each one consists of a set of numbers that provide the needed information when some IP device is trying to locate another one in order to interact with it. There are two types of IP; it depends on the way you connect to the Internet, which kind you are using. Do you use the same one each time you connect? That's the Static kind. If you go online through dialup or through shared Internet cable, you have a Dynamic IP address. It is more convenient to "be" Static because the numbers do not change as often and therefore it is easier to locate that particular device. It is also possible to change the IP address you're currently using, but to do so is irresponsible because the receiver can not contact you back. This action is called spoofing. It is not only the personal computers that have an IP address; it is also the phones, printers, faxes or routers. Recently, there has been a research in California on all IP addresses available. Any device that responded to their query was included into this map. Thanks to this research the scientists can see how people are treating the Internet and make further, upgraded decisions. And hence improve the Internet.

BBC opens new virtual playground
by Nina Gotzmannova

BBC will welcome all computer educated kids on their new virtual playground. Adventure Rock, as the name of the new project is will provide a free, safe and no-advertisement virtual world for kids. With this step BBC will join companies like Disney or Nickelodeon and offer children a ‘cool new place' to spend their afternoons. BBC created the game, because according to their research, kids don't want to be passive viewers of something, and they want to interact. They would be also able to socialize, play and learn. Another reason is that BBC makes less new programmes for children and they want to fill this gap this way. In Adventure Rock kids can explore, create, innovate and interact with each other. The game allows them to sing, dance, drawn, play games, create art and solve a mystery. The only thing that will be missing will be a chat. BBC wants to protect children and thus disable any communication between the game users and potential sexual offenders. They claim as a public broadcaster the game must be as safe as possible. The game will be also free. Unlike several similar projects, which force kids to use their parent's money to buy things in the virtual world for their virtual selves, Adventure Rock is different. BBC doesn't want to make money on this game. Every service will be absolutely free and with no advertisements. Several companies wanted to participate in the project and set their branches in the virtual world, but BBC declined. In Adventure Rock kids won't be affected by brands and products. The only question is if is not healthier for the kids to go to the real playground and there sing, play and socialize instead of sitting in front of computer screen and get involved in virtual reality…

When the phone becomes your wallet
by Corina Ciubotaru

Money. It's the lifeblood of all economies, it's what some of us live for and over the years, we managed to turn it into many wonderful things. The first currencies were spices, furs and precious metals then came the coins. Their rule ended with the birth of the bank notes in Europe, which then spread in the entire world and have ended up sharing wallets with electronic cards. But now, none of these forms of money are needed; developing countries are quickly adopting the practice of storing cash on mobile phones without using bank accounts, since more of them have mobiles than bank accounts or cards. They can pay at certain shops just by waving the phone and they can also withdraw money or send it to each other using a simple SMS, like Filipinos do who work abroad. They can even pay their bills through a text message from another country and this is particularly useful if they want to feel closer to the family and involved in it's every day life. It's big business for the telephone operators too, as the biggest two in the Philippines now have between them 5.5 million users for this service, with abroad workers having sent home $12.7 billion last year. The system is also very safe, each transfer requiring a personal identification number known only to the phone's user. Other countries where this so-called "mobile banking" system is growing steadily include Kenya and South Africa but those who have mastered this business and have been using it for years are Japan and South Korea.
