Simplifying gadgets to simplify other gadgets
by Martina Harvanova

The more gadgets and various electronic appliances we have, the bigger our problems to deal with the collateral impact of them actually are. We want to eat something, but as our microwave doesn't work, we get almost helpless to feed ourselves. Some of us face difficulty to communicate with others personally, without any mediation or agent like computer or phone. Well, in spite of those mentioned examples that can be deemed as definitely extreme situations of inability to exist without technologies, the truth isn't as far as one may think. The recent issue of British military helicopters causing much trouble to the public is an example of a case when humans have to invent other appliances to simplify the previously invented appliances. Basically, the case is as following: The noise of military helicopters spread mostly in the neighborhood of London is not to endure anymore. Consequences have already affected British inhabitants as well as local animals. Therefore The London Assembly's Environmental Committee has started to investigate the issue. Member's of the organization defined particular goals to begin with the research. First of all, they wanted to determinate the impact of helicopter traffic and noise on the population. Secondly, the aim was to assess what improvements can be done. Those main purposes were followed by developing and establishing a device that should soften the noise. The name of that "miracle" is SurfaceSound. Its principle is based on conducting of sound. The whole thing is about the size of a pocket journal and should be crafted into Toyota cars, Gateway computers, Hallmark greeting cards and more. The entire affair of this gadget is much broader as well as it is becoming an interesting subject for high-tech producers, because there is always something to improve on it. It just makes me wonder (and also laugh) when I conceive how incredible the circular flow of inventing always the newest technologies in fact is. This business is one of the most stable ones. We definitely know, there need to exist manufacturers who would invent devices to improve the old devices.
