New technology
by Claudia Sonea
Good news for the people that cannot hear; IBM created a system called SiSi that through an animated avatar can transform a speech into a text and then into gestures. Therefore the avatar can translate spoken words into sign language and replace the human interpreters for the deaf when they are unavailable or the conversation is too sensitive. The fantasy of attending a lecture while in the background is a digital character projected on a screen interpreting the speech in real time it finally became true. Still the IBM team and advocates for the deaf are cooling the euphoria by revealing that it is in trial and it works only with British Sign Language for now due to the fact that it was created in IBM research center in Hursley, England. The new technology is expected to become commercial and also to expand to other countries' sign languages. There is no ground unexplored by researchers and it's a good piece of news that instead of a new type of missile they created something useful for those that were less fortunate. With the new device communication should be easier and if all the institutions will acquire one, definitely the people with hearing disability will have a more comfortable life. Go IBM, go! Stay connected to see what price will have the new wonder.
