Is the Blue-ray good enough to survive?
American disc market is full of fights and discussion about latest fight between Blue-ray high-definition Sony Corp. format and HD DVD Toshiba Corp. format. Everything started with the announcement of Warner Bros. Entertainment that this big movie producer will release their films only on Blue-ray and traditional DVD formats what puts Toshiba Corp. out of competition. This maybe unfair, maybe too fast step is very controversial as well because it seems that HD DVD is cheaper, has the same advantages as Blue-ray and does not even need new special Blue-ray player able to replay movies. Anyhow Blue-ray seems to be more popular among costumers who were fulfilling the stores during the Holidays. The question is if the new and popular is really better and if the new and popular will last longer than the Holiday season. There is always something which is new and seems to be the best option, great advertisements even make it more attractive and we become blind and see only the glam and glory of new amazing product without any disadvantages. The truth is only time can show how effective and useful will Blue-ray be in the eyes of wide society after taking off the pink glasses that make our view easy without criticism. Some time ago there was competition between Betamax and VHS video tapes and obviously VHS won as almost no one knows what Betamax is. The reason was better price even Betamax had better technical qualities. I am not saying this will necessarily happen in case of Blue-ray and HD DVD. This is only an example. Of course timing was much different back then and the issue of this fight could be timing as well. Is the disc market still major? Do people still pay a lot of money for compact discs? Is the era of Internet giving any space for discs in the future? Only time can say.
