Chris Cantell Discusses Technologies: Intel and Microsoft split?
by Claudia Sonea

Intel Corp. opens a new trend in computer business. Its Chief Executives Paul Otellini speaks about the need to offer people in exchange of faster processors, cheaper and smaller ones. Because Microsoft doesn't have anything cheap, you can understand why there is bound to be a split between the long time partners. Let us take a look at what Intel offers and computer manufacturers buy. The Atom processor packs the power of a PC-class processor in spaces of square inch dimensions and is meant for Mobile Internet Devices (MID) which are similar to the iPhone, but looks like small tablets. Another product which Intel presents proudly is the "netbook", a small and cheap laptop, that you can test it if you buy an eeePC that Taiwan's AsusTek offers ($300). Hewlett-Packard Co. has something similar, but the chip is not from Intel, it is from Via Technologies Inc. There is also the area of wireless technology and Intel decided to invest in WiMax, a wireless technology to build a network and make it available this year. In addition it invested in a Japanese WiMax license and bought a wireless broadband license in Sweden. Stay calm, Intel will not become a network operator- at least that is what Otellini says. This and the fact that Intel users turn more to Linux operating system made the link between Intel and Microsoft weaker. Otellini refuses Vista as being too expensive and currently its "netbooks" have Linux or Windows XP. What will happen next? Don't click away, this might be your lucky day!
