French hanballers' new help
by Livia Cseresova
The Olympic Games in Beijing start today, on 8th August. France handballers are really excited about them, and one of the reasons of their excitement is that they have a new help. The help improving their game is a complex spy software.
The French, guided by their head coach Phillipe Bana began using the software, which combines videos of all the handball players in the world with match statistics. This helps them see the opponents’ strengths and weaknesses and therefore train the right way. Before French, the Scandinavian handballers started using the technology and very successfully.
The software helps at studying each move of rivals and so the players can plan a great counter-attack.
As Bana said to Reuters earlier this week during the practice session of men, the female team “is now able to destroy their (opponents’) attack and defense systems.” He believes this is a “completely different approach, we have video specialists as part of the team so now there is this culture of the video statistic.”
In handball, this system is relatively new, but in other sports, like football and rugby are similar software already widely used.
For the Olympic Games in Sydney, in 2000, France used a basic version of the recent system and applied the recent system, which is called “Dartfish” for the Athens Olympics in 2004. In Athens, France, however, closely lost to Ukraine and finished fourth, missing a bronze medal.
On Saturday morning, which is tomorrow, France’s women are going to play the first handball game of the Olympics against Angola. France’s men will play their first game on Sunday afternoon, against Brazil.
