iPhone has a kill switch
by Livia Cseresova
According to Steve Jobs from Apple, the company's famous iPhone 3G does have a kill switch, which has an ability to remove software from it.
Jobs believes that Apple has to have the ability in case of unintentional allowing the distribution of a malicious program to iPhones through App Store. He hopes, however, that they will never need to deal with this, but it wouldn't be responsible if they had no assurance.
As Job said, Apple has never used the kill switch before, but last week, it actually removed an application from the App Store.
The application that was removed was the "I Am Rich" application, an application for $999, the intention of which was showing everybody around that the person who owns it isn't
poor at all. At first, this application was fully approved by Apple. And now, that they decided to remove it, they did not immediately comment on it, so nobody knew the reason why it was actually removed.
But the "I Am Rich" Application is not the only application to be removed. Applications BoxOffice and NullRiver's NetShare disappeared too.
Avi Greengart, the Current Analysis analyst said that the kill switch "is a very controlling gesture. I am not sure why Apple didn't disclose it up front as simply a security measure. Consumers will accept an awful lot if you let them know what they are accepting."
Previously, Jobs said he didn't want to allow applications to bring the network down. Greengart doesn't think that is a big threat, because the company approves all the applications.
What is even more debated is that the author of the books iPhone Open Application Development and iPhone Forensics Manual, Jonathan Zdziarski revealed a URL hidden in the firmware of Apple. The URL links to a file, which is called "unauthorizedApps". This is exactly the file where bad application may possibly go when they are withdrawn from the App Store.
