Online Olympics on Internet
by Magdalena Rosova
NBC Universal is running an unbelievable 3,600 hours of Olympics coverage, most of it live. Fans can watch their favorite sport on television and Internet as well in a way impossible even in Beijing.
NBC´s video player has four feeds – live, on-demand or a combination – as far as many events are at night.
The internet video is not full-screen but you can see the sweat on the skin of one of the tennis player. Another advantage is that it is free, you only have to watch and add before the event.
Anyway, the Internet will not replace television soon. It is good for watching events which you watch only in highlights on TV.
NBC check your Internet Protocol address to assure that you are in USA, where NBC has the right to broadcast the games.
Games are broadcast quality, with more camera angles and good graphics but without on-air commentary. Only text commentary with basic information appears. NBC offers the quad screens and „picture-in-picture“ viewing too.
Weak spot of NBC is that some videos are wrong labeled. Furthermore, you can search video by country or sport, but not both. Most of all, the video does not have the basic functions of digital video recorders. It is impossible to pause or rewind the live feeds, or watch a key play in slow motion.
NBC´s web site has also profiles of athletes and shows results. You can even sign up to get various e-mail and cell phone alerts. But be careful, if you don’t want to be waken up in the middle of the night, don’t choose the gold medal alerts.
NBC has improved a lot and is definitely on the right way. We can look forward what it will be like in 2010, when the Winter Games are in Vancouver.
