Chris Cantell Discusses Technologies: Extra to political debates
by Claudia Sonea
In my mind there is a Christmas tune, slightly changed so that it sounds: Presidential elections are coming,/ Presidential elections are coming…You might guess what it is all about. This fall we start counting votes and most countries elect their president (except Romania of course, because we have a president elected for a 5 years period). The US is one of the lucky ones and that is why pretenders to the title are getting ready to a face-to-face combat.
Because they always come up with something new, this year too the Americans brought a new concept that is supposed to bring the public opinion closer to the candidates. In order to create an interaction only TV or the Internet would be the solution, so the best interactive television service, Current TV, is the one broadcasting presidential debates starting 26 September. The catch is that Twitter messages from viewers will be broadcasted in real time while John McCain and Barack Obama will confront.
It is new, entertaining and most of all it is a new way of getting the feedback straight from the audience all over the country. Current was co-founded by former Vice President Al Gore who thought about post-debate punditry together with Joel Hyatt, CEO of Current. The comments will be filtered according to broadcast standards, but they promise to try to give all of hem if there is no vulgarity included.
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, this is your chance to stand up and express your opinion. After all, your country is the role-model for democracy and the freedom to speak out and fight for the things you believe in are included in your principles. Good luck!
