Social networking sites decide about your future job
by Magdalena Rosova

Written references are becoming relic. One in five of hiring managers say they search job candidates through social networking sites and a third of them dismissing the candidate after what they find out.

A survey by job website CareerBuilder.com discovered that 22 percent out of 3,169 hiring managers screen potential employees via social networking profiles.

Nine percent of managers say even though they do not use social networking sites such as Facebook or MySpace to learn more about potential stuff yet, but they plan to do so soon.

34 percent of the managers exclude candidates from short list because of what they find about them on Internet. The most usual reason for dropping the candidate is posting information about drinking or using drugs and posting provocative or inappropriate photographs or information.

Managers say they use social network sites due to bad communication skills of applicants and because they often lie about their qualifications. Many times candidates use discriminatory remarks on race, gender or religion.

Not all experiences are bad, 24 percent of hiring managers say the content they found about candidate ensured them it is the right person for their company. A site with professional image proving a lot of interests, background supporting the qualification for the job and good communication skills influenced decision of hiring managers to employ candidates.

"As a result, more job seekers are taking action to make their social networking profiles employer-friendly. Sixteen percent of workers who have social networking pages said they modified the content on their profile to convey a more professional image to potential employers," added Rosemary Haefner, CareerBuilder.com spokeswoman.
