Microsoft's newest browser blocks ads
by Magdalena Rosova
Microsoft’s newest version of internet browser enables users surf without being bothered by commercials.
Companies selling advertisements online are able to get information about surfers` habits and thereafter choose what kind of ad to show. Thought Microsoft released new “beta” test version of Internet Explorer 8 on Wednesday, which has a special mode called InPrivateBrowsing. This mode allows users surf and not have a list of sites they visit stored on their computers. The program has also others new functions, such as temporary Internet files and cookies.
Current browser Internet Explorer 7 and Mozilla’s Firefox 3, they both have option to block cookies and also allow users to block private information like browsing history or temporary files. However, it is impossible to turn off the collection completely.
The newest version doesn’t show some kinds of ads as well. J.J. Richards, a general manager in Microsoft’s advertising division, said that users know they get free content and services in exchange for advertising. But they want "transparency, trust and control with respect to the sites they visit,“ he added.
InPrivateBlocking enable users to see which companies are trying to collect data from page visitors. Users can read more about the company and thereafter decide whether to provide information or not.
However, Web publishers are worried whether the spread using of InPrivateBlocking won’t destroy small sites which entirely rely on ads. Mike Zaneis, vice president of public policy for the Internet Advertising Bureau, said: "I think (Microsoft) realizes, we all realize that it's a beta version, and it's sure to change before it's finalized."
Microsoft didn’t say yet when are they planning to officially release a final version, but said this beta is ready for average users to try.
