RIM's new phones by Claudia Sonea

Research In Motion Ltd. is well known for the BlackBerry brand and it is the strongest rival that Apple has when it comes to cell phones. In the last quarter their profits were very close (6.1 RIM's profit and 6.9 Apple's), therefore RIM thought to release another three BlackBerrys (BlackBerry Storm, BlackBerry Bold 900, and BlackBerry Pearl Flip 822o) that should turn the balance more into their favor. Will RIM succeed?
Let's have a look at the touch-screen BlackBerry Storm which is supposed to be the main rival of Apple's iPhone 3G and the first touch-screen of the brand. It was released on 14 November in UK and 21 in US having as carriers Vodafone, Verizon Wireless, Telus, Bell Canada. Yet this is not that important, what matters is the screen- 3.25" HVGA 480x360 Multi-touch capable of up to 65,536 colors with SurePressâ„¢ technology. The operating system is BlackBerry OS 4.7; the central processing unit is 528 MHz Qualcomm processor on Verizon model, and 624 MHz Marvell Intel XScale on Vodafone model; the memory is 128 MB Flash, 1GB onboard storage and a memory card. In addition it has stereo Bluetooth and a 3.2 megapixel camera that can record videos. It all sounds good in theory, but users and reviewers were quite hush with it and complained about the sluggish interface, lock-ups, memory leaks and crashes if you try multiple tasks at once.
BlackBerry Bold 900 uses AT&T's 3G network or WiFi, has GPS capabilities, stereo Bluetooth, great screen resolution, just like the Storm, but no touching screen, slow in taking commands and other minor faults. BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 is not that good as the other two models, but it comes in handy if you are making a transition from a traditional one to a touch-screen cell phone. Tech sector layoffs by Claudia Sonea

Do you remember when I told you that the technology sector will always offer good news in a climate dominated by the financial and economical crisis? Well, I was wrong and the number of people that lost their jobs proved it. Apparently, even the necessary gadgets like the cell phone have become too much of a luxury for people to keep interest in them.
A global consulting firm dealing with job cuts called Challenger, Gray & Christmas, Inc. presented its report on Friday and the situation was quite grey. According to them the technology sector will get to alarming numbers of firings like 180,000 people. Only in October there were 140,422 job cuts, more than the record number of 2003. It is much more than the last year figures of 107,295, but a lot less than the 695,581 job cuts in 2001. Even Cisco (shares are down 24 percent) forecasts a rougher period for the tech sector, mostly due to businesses becoming more aware of the economical downturn and thus cutting back equipment purchases and upgrades.
However, it is odd than although giant PC companies record more-than-expected third quarter profits. Google, Microsoft, Yahoo and others are not just satisfied with their profits (especially Yahoo), but also launch new products on the market and develop all kind of attractive offers. Yet, we shouldn’t forget that the tech sector relays heavily on the consumer spending which is weakening daily. If indeed will get hit, the tech sector will shake the world as we now know. What will it be?

National Geographic Launches Video-Game by Magdalena Rosova

National Geographic announced a new video game on Tuesday. National Geographic Games (NGG) will develop games for most gaming console – handheld, online and mobile platforms. NGG says they want to cooperate with main game publishers and developers.

The aim of creating new games is to spread National Geographic´s mission, which means to inspire people to care about the planet. National Geographic believes that the game will impact the new generation of young people.

National Geographic announced partnerships with Namco Bandai Games America and Sony Computer Entertainment to distribute the game on major gaming consoles and handheld devices such as Nintendo Wii, PlayStation 3 or mobile devices like Apple´s iPhone.

National Geographic´s first game is called Herod´s Lost Tomb which refers to the biblical figure King Herod, architect of the ancient world. The game is freely available on internet.

National Geographic announced also few more games, for example Panda and Africa. Next year they are planning to release three games: Rain Forests, Greencity and From the Bottom Up.

The games belong to the genre of hidden-object games, which is quite popular nowadays and is very appropriate for National Geographic´s message as well.

A team of experts will work hard to make National Geographic Games a competitive video-game on the market. Paul Levine, who works as a National Geographic sevior vice president, will lead the new video division and Chris Mate, former executive of Take2 Interactive and Bethesda Softworks, will use all his gained experiences to work as a president and general manager of NGG.

First computers, than mobile phones and now there is going to appear also possibility to browse on the Internet without any of these devices. Is it interesting enough for you? Or are you just incredibly curious? Well then imagine you should instead of these two the most used devices for browsing start using your television. Qualcomm – US wireless technology giant is working on new technology which could enable also people in poor countries connect to the Internet without using personal computers. They call it “Kayak PC alternative” which should enable televisions or monitors to link online using 3G high-speed broadband wireless networks. But if you are imagining that from now on everyone in India or Africa will be creating profiles on MySpace or Facebook, you are wrong. This step is oriented especially on one aim – internet access for worldwide markets, especially in emerging regions, as Luis Pineda, Qualcomm CDMA Technologies vice president of product management said.

I don’t know why, but I am not surprise, neither excited. I am asking myself if these million projects are really so necessary? Idea of creating real “global online community” is maybe nice, but I think that more important would be working on our mutual relationships, rather than creating some kind of web in which we will be hanging together but still fighting separately. For big technology lovers (I used to be one before) is it a huge step, but for pragmatic people (I am trying to be now) it is not so important. There is coming one more question – are we really trying to help poor countries and their people or are we just trying to make a fortune? But ok, maybe this is a real effort to bring internet connectivity to developing markets, and let’s say Qualcomm has got a brilliant idea. I personally am quite interested what is going to happen.

First of all, Youtube is trying to appease the spirits concerning property rights, thus the partner with MGM will give users the opportunity to see movies and clips directly from the source and like usual for free because the advertisers are paying big money. The announcement came on Monday and only two days later a second announcement came: "Sponsored Videos" platform. Advertisers can now bid for search words which will display the ads along with the results. The new technology looks for sponsored videos and charge "per click".
Another good move is online live shows and the first such show will take place on 22 this monthin Fort Mason Center near San Francisco's famed Fisherman's Wharf from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
